VAMPIRE LORD - CHAPTER 18

The Beacon was gone.
But the light hadn’t left.
The Paladin stood amidst the wreckage of the broken Arena, divine fire bleeding from his armor like a second skin. His body smoked where Alistair’s blade had cracked the plating, but the Beacon’s blessing pulsed through him now.
Brighter. Stronger.
[Beacon Buff – Active]
+15% to All Attributes
Light Damage Amplified
Divine Aura Intensified
Alistair wiped blood from his lip and forced himself to his feet.
Everything hurt. His ribs throbbed. His sword arm shook. His mana pool hovered just above empty.
HP: 93 / 140
Mana: 42 / 102
Status: Lightburn (Minor)
Debuff: Sun’s Drain – Active
No regen. No hiding. And now, the Paladin was burning like a damn star.
The Herald’s voice split the air, as dramatic as ever.
“OH, WOULD YOU LOOK AT THAT! HE DIDN’T DIE, HE POWERED UP! THAT’S RIGHT, FOLKS, THE BEACON BUFF IS STILL BURNING, AND THIS HOLY HAMMER IS BACK ON HIS FEET WITH VENGEANCE IN HIS VEINS!”
The Paladin raised his blade.
Alistair barely had time to react.
A flash of golden light ignited beneath the Paladin’s boots, divine dash. He surged forward like a meteor, shield raised, blade aimed for Alistair’s chest.
[Skill: Judged by Light – Activated]
Type: Dash + Strike
Bonus: Light-aligned, ignores stealth and evasion
Cooldown: 60s
Alistair dove sideways.
But the edge still caught him.
HP: -21
HP: 72 / 140
Status: Dazed (0.5s)
He rolled across broken stone, boots skidding, breath knocked from his lungs. The Paladin didn’t slow. He came down with another overhead slash...
Alistair blocked.
Barely.
[Redcrystal Sword – Parry Attempt: Partial Success]
Damage Reduced: 50%
HP: -12
HP: 60 / 140
His arm screamed from the impact.
He kicked off a fallen column and sprinted, putting distance between them.
The Arena responded.
[Arena Status: Unstable Terrain – Event Incoming]
Phase Shift: “Ashfall Spiral”
Shadow pools collapsing. New hazards forming.
All around them, spires cracked. Dust rose. The ground itself twisted, some parts pulling inward, others warping under celestial pressure. A staircase of floating platforms appeared on one side, leading toward an obsidian arch glowing faintly with dark magic.
Alistair’s mind raced. The Paladin still had the buff. He couldn’t match him head-on. Not yet.
He needed time.
He needed cover.
He needed a miracle.
The Herald howled above, voice giddy.
“THE ARENA ISN’T DONE YET, FOLKS! NEW PLATFORMS! NEW HAZARDS! NEW WAYS TO SUFFER AND LOOK GOOD DOING IT!”
Alistair took off toward the platforms. He leapt the first one, barely catching the edge. The Paladin followed, not as fast, but relentless. Glowing. Radiant.
Alistair hit the second step and pivoted. The height advantage gave him one opening. Just one.
He raised his hand.
[Searing Vein – Cast]
Mana: -15
Damage: Moderate + Burn
Mana: 27 / 102
The blast of blood-fire caught the Paladin mid-air as he jumped between ledges. His shield absorbed most of it, but he grunted.
[Burn Applied – Minor]
Status: Burn Expiration in 00:10
Alistair’s eyes narrowed.
“Come on. Come on…”
His landing faltered. His foot clipped the edge of the third platform. He stumbled.
[Environmental Warning: Platform Instability – 3s]
Alistair didn’t hesitate.
He charged again, redcrystal sword up, low and fast, using the broken rhythm. If he could land one clean hit, maybe two...
The Paladin recovered faster than expected.
Shield up. Sword raised.
Still burning.
Still holy.
Still deadly.
Alistair felt it in his chest, the margin was getting thinner.
Too thin.
The platform shook beneath them.
Dust rose in lazy spirals as Alistair landed hard, boots skidding across polished obsidian. He didn’t have time to breathe. The Paladin was already there, descending like a guillotine wrapped in sunlight.
Alistair raised his sword just in time.
[Parry: Success – 60% damage reduction]
HP: -10
Current HP: 50 / 140
His arms shuddered from the force of the impact. The Paladin hit like a battering ram wrapped in prayer. Alistair staggered back, dropped into a low stance, and twisted, barely dodging the follow-up.
The Paladin didn’t relent.
He surged forward, shield slamming toward Alistair’s chest.
Too close.
No time for spells. No space for tricks.
Time to fight.
Alistair caught the shield edge with his left hand, twisted his hips, and drove a knee into the Paladin’s thigh where the armor was split.
[Target Weak Spot: Hit Confirmed]
Status: Limp – Minor movement penalty
The Paladin grunted and backhanded him with the edge of his shield.
Alistair’s head snapped sideways.
HP: -7
HP: 43 / 140
He spit blood and kept moving.
They locked blades again, sword to sword. No spells. No buffs. Just steel, instinct, and rage.
Alistair feinted left, slashed right. The Paladin blocked.
He ducked low, tried to sweep the legs. The Paladin jumped, landed hard, and drove a fist into Alistair’s gut.
HP: -11
HP: 32 / 140
Status: Winded (1s)
Alistair gasped, dropped to one knee.
The Paladin raised his sword overhead, glowing, divine.
Alistair rolled forward and came up behind him, blade slicing across the backplate.
Critical Hit!
Paladin HP: 94% → 88%
The Paladin spun, shield-first, but Alistair was already inside the guard.
He elbowed the Paladin in the throat.
It wasn’t elegant. It wasn’t pretty.
But it worked.
Status: Staggered
The Paladin stumbled.
Alistair didn’t waste the moment. He grabbed a chunk of rubble from the platform floor and slammed it into the side of the Paladin’s helmet.
Paladin HP: 88% → 84%
Status: Dazed (0.5s)
The platform groaned beneath them.
A chunk broke off behind the Paladin and dropped into the void.
The Herald shrieked with delight.
“NOW THAT’S A BRAWL! NO SPELLS, NO PRAYERS, JUST FANGS, FISTS, AND GOOD OLD-FASHIONED TRAUMA!”
The Paladin recovered faster than he should have.
He lunged this time with a headbutt.
Alistair saw stars.
HP: -8
HP: 24 / 140
Status: Disoriented (1.5s)
He staggered backward.
The Paladin raised his shield and drove it forward like a battering ram.
Alistair didn’t dodge.
He absorbed it, turned with the impact, and spun around the Paladin’s side. His sword came up.
One, two, three quick cuts to the exposed backplate.
Paladin HP: 84% → 79%
79% → 74%
74% → 68%
The Paladin howled.
His armor cracked.
Alistair’s skin blistered just from being this close. The Paladin’s aura flared again, golden heat crawling under Alistair’s skin like living fire.
But his buff still held. His aura flared again, light spilling from his skin like it was trying to cauterize every wound as it happened.
[Beacon Buff: Stabilized]
Divine Efficiency: Healing surge minimized damage
Damn it.
Alistair ducked low as a glowing blade cut the air above his head. He kicked the Paladin’s injured leg again.
Target Staggered
The Paladin dropped to one knee.
Alistair raised his sword...
The light surged in retaliation, no spell, no conscious action. Just holy backlash. It burned across Alistair’s knuckles, hissing against undead flesh.
A golden flash followed, erupting from the Paladin’s gauntlet.
Too late.
Alistair’s blow deflected against a sudden wall of light.
He leapt back, breathing hard.
HP: 24 / 140
Mana: 27 / 102
Stamina: 39%
The Paladin stood again.
Bleeding. Breathing hard. Light dripping from his armor like sweat.
But not falling.
The Herald shouted:
“AND THE VAMPIRE’S STILL FIGHTING! HE’S A BLEEDING, STAGGERING, GLORIOUS MESS OF HATE AND HOPE, BUT CAN HE FINISH THIS? OR WILL THE LIGHT TAKE BACK WHAT THE BEACON GAVE?”
Alistair didn’t answer.
He just gripped his sword tighter and stepped forward again.
The Paladin’s blade came down like a hammer wrapped in divine judgment.
Alistair’s legs were slow. His arms felt like lead. He couldn’t dodge in time.
So he didn’t.
He screamed the spell.
[Chittering Bats – Cast]
Mana: -10
Mana Remaining: 17 / 102
Magic burst from his palm in a swarm of shrieking shadows. The air filled with black wings and piercing sound.
The Paladin’s sword slammed into the swarm, but the strike missed its mark.
Alistair dropped low, rolled between the Paladin’s legs, and sprinted for the base of the Ashfall Spire.
The Herald howled.
“SAVED BY BATS, BABY! YOU CAN’T MAKE THIS UP; THE SHADOW RAT SURVIVES BY THROWING A CLOUD OF NIGHTMARES INTO HIS ENEMY’S TEETH!”
Alistair made a mental note: buy that spell a drink later. Hell, buy it a house.
He didn’t wait any longer.
He turned and ran, boots slamming against fractured stone, limbs screaming. He leapt to the next platform. Then the next.
The path ahead wound upward, cracked, spiraling, unpredictable. A stairway of floating debris, each step more unstable than the last. All of it pointed toward the towering silhouette that loomed overhead:
Ashfall Spire.
A twisting structure of obsidian, glowing faintly with dark magic. It pulsed like a dying heart beneath the collapsing sky.
Behind him, the Paladin followed.
Heavy boots. Holy fire. Unstoppable.
Alistair didn’t look back.
He reached the Spire and kept climbing, scrambling up shattered steps, pulling himself over ledges, barely avoiding the plates of crumbling stone that sheared off into the void below.
The Spire creaked.
Cracks spiderwebbed across its surface. Every footstep sent tremors through the stone.
He reached the top.
A jagged platform, no railings, no cover. Just ten meters of wind-whipped stone and divine pressure. The Arena stretched below like a broken world, molten cracks and shattered towers dotting its surface.
And then the Paladin arrived.
He climbed over the ledge, breathing hard, armor scorched and cracked. But the light still burned in him.
Great, he’s glowing again. That’s always encouraging.
[Beacon Buff – Active]
Status: Radiant Empowerment (Stable)
No words.
Just one final charge.
Alistair met him head-on.
Their swords clashed, steel ringing against steel, sparks flying in every direction. They moved like dying things. Desperate. Exhausted. Pushed past reason.
The Paladin struck high. Alistair parried, twisted, and slashed low.
Blocked.
He spun left. The Paladin followed, driving him toward the Spire’s edge.
A missed swing nearly threw him off balance.
He ducked. Countered.
Their blades locked again, face to face, inches apart.
The Paladin grunted. “Fall.”
Alistair bared his fangs. “You first.”
Then...
[Swordsmanship – Level Up!]

Mana Cost: 15

His sword glowed red.
Not fire. Not dark magic.
Mana, funneled straight into the edge.
Alistair smirked, “Do all Paladins smell like incense and disappointment?”
He twisted his hips and struck.
[Imbued Strike – Activated]
Mana: -15
Mana Remaining: 3 / 102
The impact was like a thunderclap.
The Paladin reeled backward, boots skidding across the obsidian.
[Critical Hit!]
Paladin HP: 68% → 51%
Status: Armor Integrity – Breached (Chestplate)
The Spire groaned.
A tremor ran through the platform.
[Ashfall Spire – Instability Threshold Reached]
Collapse Event: Pending
Chunks of stone cracked loose.
The Herald shrieked above, thrilled.
“AND NOW, THE WORLD’S FALLING APART! ONE VAMPIRE! ONE HOLY BLADE! ONE SPIRE THAT DOESN’T WANT TO EXIST ANYMORE! WHO’S GOING DOWN WITH IT?!”
Alistair lunged again another swing, this time aimed at the knees.
Blocked.
The Paladin shoved forward with his shield slammed Alistair in the ribs.
HP: -9
HP: 15 / 140
Alistair gasped but didn’t fall.
He headbutted the Paladin square in the face.
Status: Staggered
The Paladin stumbled, one foot sliding over crumbling stone.
The Spire tilted.
The ground shifted.
Chunks of obsidian peeled off and plummeted into the void. The Spire shrieked beneath their boots, a grinding, tearing wail of stone and pressure and finality.
[Ashfall Spire – Collapse Event Active]
Structure Integrity: 6%
Full Collapse in 10… 9… 8…
The Paladin staggered, blood trailing from his cracked helm. But he was still burning with light. His armor glowed with borrowed divinity. The Beacon's blessing hadn’t faded.
He raised his sword.
Alistair couldn’t block again. Not again.
Not with his arms shaking. Not with his stamina in the red. Not with his health bar barely above zero.
HP: 15 / 140
Mana: 2 / 102
Stamina: 27 / 132
He wasn’t going to win this.
Not like this.
But damn if he wasn’t going to die looking cool doing it.
Then he saw it.
Behind the Paladin. Framed by dust and falling rock.
A glowing obsidian arch, half-embedded in the peak of the Spire. No inscription. No platform. Just darkness pulsing like a heartbeat, rimmed in violet flame.
The only thing in this world not trying to kill him.
Maybe.
Alistair’s eyes locked on it.
Go toward the creepy portal. Always ends well.
He ran.
Not at the Paladin. Past him.
The Paladin roared, turned, swung...
Too late.
Alistair ducked under the blade, boots slipping, knees buckling. He slammed his shoulder into the Paladin’s ribs, not to knock him down, just to get through.
He sprinted across the breaking stone, across open gaps, feet hammering down on a path that no longer existed.
[Spire Collapse – 4… 3…]
Behind him, the Paladin shouted a word in a language that didn’t belong to men.
A beam of light lanced past Alistair’s shoulder, searing the edge of his cloak.
He didn’t stop.
Didn’t look back.
The arch grew closer, its surface rippling, trembling, waiting.
One step.
Two.
The floor cracked.
[Ashfall Spire – Integrity: 0%]
The world dropped out from under him.
He leapt.
His fingers caught the edge of the arch. Just enough.
Stone gave way beneath his boots. He hung for half a heartbeat in midair.
Then the darkness pulled him in.
