in the tape that plays on BMO, the Ice King says to Gunther that he put the crown in his kick drum. when theyβre walking away, Fionna looks back at the drumset and the crown is sticking out of it, so she grabs it there, not in the Winter King world

What I find the most tragic is the fact that it all happened in one second. Simon wanted to put the crown on his head as a joke and in the second he did so, his and Betty's lives were over. It wasn't a sacrifice or a heroic act, it was just a harmless joke that went wrong in every possible way.
