However, I always feel that the ideas are a bit exhausted

For a creative bit of input if you want something exciting for this enemy...If it helps with this enemy in particular I think merging into a body part is totally an option. After all they don't have their tail sticking out.

If you need other forms of TF, I personally like hypnotic transformation, with no real physical cause. Or a latex beast shoving itself down your throat and transforming you from within
