“Harry…What are you talking about?” Asked Ron with a confused tone.
“Yes…Please explain yourself, Harry,” Daphne was as confused as the red-haired man.
“Well, my boss made me choose between you and my job and before you tell me something I need you to understand that she told me that I was forbidden to date you even after you finished your punishment, she told me she didn’t want to make it look like you got benefits thanks to me, if you and I dated it would arise suspicions amongst the general public,” Harry explained with a weak smile on his face.
“B-But your job Harry…You love your job!” Daphne couldn’t believe what she was hearing.
She was happy that she would be able to be with him but on the other hand, she felt guilty because now he had to quit his job because of her.
“It was a fun job I must admit that, but on the other hand, I was getting a little tired of it, too many rules for someone like me, even Ron was able to adapt to the rules of the department, I’m the only one who can’t keep himself under control and with that attitude I'm never going to be something more than another low-rank Auror,” the dark-haired wizard explained.
“Harry…” Ron was surprised, he thought his friend was happy being a low-ranking Auror but it seems like he wasn’t that correct.
“Yeah, it’s fun to be a loose canon that does whatever he wants, however, now that I found you and that I feel like I want to be with you I have come to realize something, being a low-ranking Auror is not enough if I want to be with you, it would be hard and dangerous to start a family in the future under those circumstances,” his words made the blonde blush.
She wanted to tell him to forget about those things and that love was enough, but she couldn’t bring herself to lie to him, after all, it seemed like no matter how much money her family had, she knew that Harry wouldn’t accept not being the one who provides.
“After all I lost everything I had, Gringotts took everything from me but I’m glad it was enough for them to not press charges against me and my best friends from the heist!” Harry said as he looked at his red-haired friend.
“So…What are you planning to do now?” Asked the blonde now understanding a bit more how he felt.
“Well, first things first, I already spoke with your mother, and she allowed me to work on the garden during your free time,” Harry gave Ron a copy of the list of the people that were allowed to enter the property and Harry’s name was there.
“Don’t tell me that…” She asked trying to not get too excited.
“Yes, I need to rebuild everything those bastards destroyed, don’t worry, I know it hurts but we’re going to make the garden so much better, I’m going to be you during your free time, luckily your secluded time has been lowered, so while you do that, I’ll be working in my autobiographical book…Well, books, I think seven will be enough,” Harry said as he scratched his chin.
“Are you serious Harry? You? A writer?” Ron couldn’t believe it, if there was one thing Harry hated the most back at Hogwarts was taking notes.
“It’s going to be a new experience but I think I can do it, it’s something I was planning to do once I retired but as you can see, it seems like now I’m in the right position to do it,” Harry said with a calm expression.
“Well, I can’t deny that is a good idea, I mean, you’re super famous I’m sure your book is going to be a best-seller without any trouble,” the blonde said with a calm expression. “Also…I’d love to read about your life but please do it realistically, do not sugarcoat it like in most biographies I’ve read about you,” she said with a calm expression.
Harry was surprised but happy to see that she was interested in his life, so, he nodded and promised her to do that.
“Still, I’m a bit worried about your finances, if you feel in trouble don’t hesitate to ask my mother for money, I’ll send her a note with instructions so she can get something out of my vault for you and—” Daphne was about to grab a parchment and a feather but she was quickly stopped by Harry.
“No, Daphne, wait…I don’t need that…Well, not yet at least, I have some savings from all these years at the Auror Corps, after all, I didn’t have too much time to spend on things that I like but in case the money gets tight, I’m planning to take professor McGonagall’s offer to take the teaching position of defense against the dark arts,” Harry tried to ease his girlfriend's worries.
Yes, any man would kill to have a beautiful girlfriend like Daphne who could also financially support them but Harry prefers to not do that, he’s young, strong, he has all his extremities, he’s at the peak of his life, it would be an insult for the people at St. Mungo's and those who died in the war if he didn’t take control of his life and does something by himself.
“Well, if you say so, then it’s fine, do as you please, no matter what you do Harry I want you to know that you have my complete support,” Daphne said before she planted a soft kiss on his lips, and made him get a big grin on his face.
“Harry…I know our friendship has had it rough recently and I want to apologize for that, it’s all my fault,” the red-haired man said surprising Harry.
“Ron, what are you talking about?” Harry was a little oblivious to the change of attitude in his best friend, he was too busy killing dark wizards to notice that.
“We joined the Auror forces together and you were labeled as some kind of genius, I was jealous, so, seeing you on the low ranks made me feel frustrated as I thought you were wasting your talent, I felt like I needed to get away from you if I wanted to raise in the ranks, I even traveled abroad on commission to learn more things to improve as an Auror, but now I feel guilty for thinking like that because it looks like you weren't that much happy in the forces...” Said the redhead with a worried tone.
Harry couldn’t help but sigh, there were only two people he couldn’t fool and those were Ron and Hermione, they knew how to read him too well.
“I can’t deny it was fun, but it only served for one purpose…To hunt death eaters, I promised to our deceased friends that I was going to hunt as many of them before I die or get fired,” he couldn’t help but chuckle. “It’s not the end of the world really, I guess my time to relax has finally come,” Harry couldn’t help but sigh after saying that.
“Yes mate, it’s time for you to rest, you’ve done everything you could and more to protect the world ever since you were born, it’s time for you to take a rest,” the redhead said before he hugged the dark-haired wizard.
Harry was a little taken aback by his friend’s change of attitude but after seeing Daphne’s expression encouraging him to hug Ron back, he did it and it felt good, he knew his relationship with Ron wouldn’t be the same as it was but this was better than nothing.
“And if you need something, don’t hesitate to ask me,” Ron told him with a smirk.
“Well, now that you mention it...I want to ask you for a favor, a big one…I want you to protect what I love the most,” Harry said as he looked at Daphne.
She couldn’t help but get her face completely red after he said that.
