In some of the rough animation, the lava hair and tail was VERY roughly blocked in just to show where it would need to go! The animators also make sure to rough in her markings to help out the clean up artists with tracking them.
For her many palette changes, the transition shots were cleaned up in both palettes fully so it'd be easier to pinpoint the EXACT frame we'd need her to change color in the later compositing phase. (less stress on the clean up artist for sure!)
Then the FX team would get to do their pass on the actual lava hair and tail. (this being a palette transition shot, the hair and tail were done in both palettes but there's only one shown in the gif, sorry about that)
And lastly, in compositing they obviously add all the final lighting, including the gradients on the lava and glowy-ness! And also the tummy lava loop the FX team created to just be pasted right in the green screen fill! They also work with the art director to make sure that palette change hits JUST right!
