Alley mentioned not particularly getting the back story on the cult leader. The crucial bit I think she missed was that the reason he was released so quickly from his earlier arrest was that the evidence had been mishandled (probably fabricated, and, by implication, by the head cop who had orchestrated the "help note" and hence this crisis too).
