I've also always thought Spike was weirdly out of character in this season of Angel, so I agree with Alley. Even the accent is a little different imo!

I really don't believe Spike is out of character this season or written badly compared to Buffy S7. I DO think this is Spike we know. Souled Spike is not someone who is concerned with atonement or brooding over guilt, he got over that super quick. He just wants to be with Buffy and if he can do some good along the way, great. I think it's foolish to believe Spike fought for his soul because, as he claims, he "knew it was right.' He only fought for his soul because after attempting to force himself on Buffy, he realized that Buffy would never choose him as he was. It wasn't until he had a soul that he realized he was never capable of unselfish love before (S6, S5 Buffy), and that he only viewed Buffy as a trophy to be possessed. His reasons for getting his soul are just as pathetic as Angel's in my mind. Then, after he got souled he displayed empathy and tenderness, but that was really only in relation to Buffy. Remove her and you have the scrappy anti-hero we see here; he fights for good, but he's gonna be a shit about it. And i personally love that to death. With souls, Angel went Captain America, and Spike went Deadpool. Spangel is the best couple ever produced on TV.
