One of the many crucial bits of "show, not tell" characterization in this episode is seeing exactly how Simon and River's parents respond to Simon's arrest and insistence that River is in danger. They are in deep denial, and care more about their family's social status than their daughter's wellbeing or their son's belief that something is very wrong. And some of the language they use, (like "Blackout Zone), add to the idea that the Alliance planets are prosperous but dictatorial. So it's terrific world-building too.

In the first episode, Simon alluded to River's talents, saying that she was quick to catch onto things (or something like that). In this episode, it was nice to see it for ourselves.
