I understood that Dawn was supposed to be around 11 but was cast when she turned up with SMG. They had become friends in ‘All My Children’ - not a show I’ve seen.

She is a couple of weeks old. She was created by monks. And they created her like they thought a teenage girl might act. That's how I and some others explain Dawn's behavior. She is NOT a real teenage girl in that sense, mind you.

I really like dawn, she’s a nice addition. That said, I think if dawn was younger by just a year or two, the dialogue would make a lot more sense. Buffy’s protective nature over a 12 year old would look a bit less out of place. I feel like I went through her thought process a bit more around the age of 12 rather than 14 (I believe she’s 14?).
