I wouldnt say sweet really, she shows up at his house uninvited and basically flashes him when he had shown no interest. If it was gender reversed it would be seen a lot differently. I can’t speak for everyone but if a man I hardly know did that to me I would be uncomfortable and scared. Of course it’s a tv show so no need to take it so seriously, and I love anya as a character, but I think this is a bit problematic and i haven’t seen many people pointing this out.

What's especially bad about this, isn't even Parker as much as this was only her second time having sex. Her first time was pretty close to this encounter as well. It's not bad enough to have happen once, but twice in a row and every time you're done it. Poor Buffy is just taking the blows in her love life. It's not, but I do like being able to follow and understand everything as it's not like I've committed every single line of dialogue to memory. Private viewings or when I'm streaming with mates, as a general rule subtitles stay on as a courtesy for those who are hard of hearing and those with auditory processing disorders. I have both, however also having ADHD I can understand how they could be distracting. It would be nice if there was another site or streaming service Alley could upload to and then maybe volunteers could transcribe the audio to subtitles, because it would be extremely lovely if I could take in Alley's commentary with the same clarity. This has the added bonus of making subtitles a toggled feature

While Ally has said that she has them on because she feels that she get's a better experience watching it. What she sees isn't related to what we see. Episodes 1 and 3 had subtitles in our view, episode 2 had no subtitles in our view. I assure you that Alley watched all 3 with subtitles in her view. I'm assuming that they're back this episode because either Alley was worried about the audio after last week or because some people asked for them back. Personally they take about half the enjoyment away from me as the text pulls my eyes away from both Alley's reaction and the acting in the episode itself. I also lose the immersion factor because I'm consciously working to look away from the subtitles instead just getting the flow. TLDR, Alley watches with subtitles regardless of what we see. People asking for no subtitles in our view doesn't change that.

I just had to speak up about this - I use subtitles as well, but I've already watched these episodes, so I don't really care if it's on or not for the version we get - but it really bothers me that people are asking you to take them off after you explained you need them in order to hear better. All of us HAVE WATCHED IT already, so what do you care if for your 5th or 15th time of watching it's with subtitles?!

Before, I believe she recorder her reaction to her tablet and added the episode later. Now she's recording her reaction to the video as she watches it on her computer, so we see what she sees. I often find that reactions to episodes I really love can fall a bit flat if the reactor does not have quite the reaction I was hoping for from them, and especially if they do not love the episode as much as I did. And conversely, I can tend to be pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable a reaction can be to an episode I don't like as much, especially when it is Alley doing the reacting.

I think she’s always had subs on but they didn’t show up on the video we see. The change in how she’s editing seems to have changed that not sure why. I’m fine with them, they only time they bother me is at the beginning when due to credits they cover up they characters.

I really enjoy your guesses Alley, though the episode titles in Buffy normally have layers of meaning (if you think about how everything in it is a metaphor - it's never just going to be "someone gets turned into a vampire"..) - in this respect, it's not only Spike that is being much "harsh-er" in the light of day (he's way more confident and slams Buffy with all the verbal punches he can think of), but more so - how things look nice and romantic in the twilight, then ugly under the sobering light of day (hence, harsh)...

I might be biased by knowing what happens after, but I am mystified at how someone can prefer the way Parker seduces Buffy to how Anya proposes Xander. Parker is ... smarmy. Whereas Anya is direct but so very sweet - she literally comes out and says "I like you." Meanwhile Parker is one big red flag IMO.

I had sound on the download, but it wasn't synced with the video (had same last episode). Was able to correct watching with VLC player as it has a "audio delay" option. Found it got worse as episode progressed, started off about 0.3s ahead of video, was up to about 2.8s ahead towards end.

Okay - so it's been years and years since I watched this - and all I could remember were the edited highlights - namely, Parker being a shitbag; Xander's heartfelt "yet more romantic than faith" and he only line from Spike that I actually thought sounded authentic with appropriate levels of ire, and British levels of sarcasm "I love syphilis more than you". Otherwise, this episode is a lot worse than I was expecting. Everything seems to come out of nowhere with barely any build up - perhaps because there's one too many plot strands and they're forcing three "romance" stories and a fight into one episode. Thanks for sorting out the volume levels - it's much better in this episode. There's still a lot of distortion from your mic though compared to whatever set up you were using previously.

"Let her have this one good moment." Never forget, this show hates Buffy. One of the few times in life that my own life paralleled Buffy's was this shit happened to us at about the same time. And boy does it hurt. Despite that, or perhaps because of that, I still like Parker. I know he's a fuckboi but I just...I like him. Adam Kaufman is great in this role. He was also on Dawson's Creek around this same time, and was one half of the first romantic gay kiss on US network TV. Also, I love that Bif Naked track "Lucky" - such a great song

"This is way too good for Buffy, I'm scared." Ahh, you're learning... of course, just as soon as you think you've got a handle on things, something else might happen... or then again might not... that's just the way Whedon's shows go & no matter how much you say "I'm ready" you won't be. "I thought he didn't want to kill everyone any more." - no, Spike just doesn't want the world to end, he exists in it & enjoys it in general, there's just some certain specific people he wants to kill :) Also his talking to Buffy as they fight.. he's not just mocking her for the sake of it but he's very savvy & perceptive about people & deliberately goading her to try & make her lose focus to give himself an advantage, remember he's already taken out 2 slayers while still relatively young so he's not a threat to be taken lightly & it's not all about how good he is at fighting. And as you gathered, this episode leads directly into the next episode of Angel.

I loved this episode and thought it was very much needed as part of a college experience. I fell for a guy and he did the same thing with the whole sweet talk. Fortunately nothing happened beyond talking and flirting but it still hurt to be played and seeing him move on. Parker, I felt was definitely human evil. He used the whole sympathy act to get girls to fall for him and then use them. But what I liked is that it shows a vulnerable, human side to Buffy we can relate to. Sure, she has super powers, has a lot of great qualities, and can face big scary monsters, but she is also a teenage girl who can fall for a guy and still fall victim to his trap. Going back to The Freshman, I hope she realizes how amazing she is and the Class Protector award always reminds her of it. Which helps us realize how great we are and it's not our fault the other guy doesn't see that. I've always been confused by Harmony as a vampire. So the vampire who bit her in the middle of the school battle decides that right then and there would be a good time to feed her some blood to sire her.

Even if he did think this was causal, his whole avoidance and "I'll call you" when she asked to hang out should have clued him into the fact she was looking for more than a one night stand and he should have clarified his position right then and there. Also while his tactic to "connect" to Buffy (and probably multiple other women as evidenced in the scene with Katy) is to live in the moment, that philosophy is based on Parker losing his father. And using a story about the death of a parent solely to get women into bed is just gross and speaks volumes about Parker's character (or lack thereof).

This is like the fourth time the “live in the moment,” “carpe diem” moto is used in the show and it’s never lead to good stuff. I think Joss took dead poets society (great movie) as a personal insult: D Unemployed Xander “working” at unemployed Giles is low key funny. The bts between the reaction and afterthoughts is great meta humor, even if unintended. I enjoy the contrasts between all the “couples.” Parker being emotionally manipulative to have a causal hook up. Anya being straight up about what she things she wants, but it’s clear by the end she doesn’t really know what she wants. Spike is actively horrible and mean to Harmony and she puts up with it, even kind of showing off she has a “boyfriend” Spike is VERY clear with Harmony about how he feels, “I love Syphilis more than you” and he’s still clearly hung up on Dru. Spike summaries the feelings of this episode “Love hurts baby” Happy Christmas to you and your Family!!

Super random but this is the second time Buffy has a love interest that plays a gay character called Ethan on a different show. Fab Filippo (Scott Hope) was Ethan on Queer as Folk and Adam Kaufmann (Parker) played Ethan on Dawson's Creek (iirc first gay kiss with Jack on network tv?). Absolutely nothing wrong with casual sex between 2 consenting adults as long as they're both aware it is just a causal sex. Clearly Parker failed to mention it to Buffy. You’re right that this was quite a world building episode. Pretty much everyone got some interesting new character developments, except maybe for Giles. Spike in particular really doubled down on being dismissive and casually abusive to women, at least women who aren’t Dru. Because while he is frequently explosive with her, ultimately we know he loves her, as much as a vampire can love anyone. But clearly Harmony is just a convenient “girlfriend” for him at this point when he’s really busy doing and caring about other things. Also, the Scoobies referring to vampires in front of civilians is one of my new favorite things. “Paler.” “Angry puppy,” and last episode, “friends who sleep all day and have no tans.” Brilliant!

Season 4 you actually get to see how quick college can be for anyone when it comes to dating. Joss wants you to want buffy to have that college experience and boy is she going too whether that be good or bad.

First I love Anya so much. Secondly, I love Harmony so much, she is such a moron. Like I've said I'm not big on S4 but this episode is a fun watch, nice to see Spike back being his usual asshole self. Though the highlights for me are attributed to the previously mentioned ladies. Also fuck Parker all my homies HATE Parker. After the shit Buffy went through with Angel she does not deserve this. This episode could be renamed "men are absolute garbage" and it wouldn't change much. Fun fact when Buffy says she got her scar from "an angry puppy" it was a throwback to the Wishverse when Vampire Willow calls Angel the puppy.

YAS let's fight!!! I KNEW this guy in college and the exact same thing happened to me. In a way I really like this storyline bc it showed me that it wasn't my fault -- even Buffy, my hero, could fall for a fucboi and his schtick. And HI SPIKE!!!! I can't wait to watch this one :)
