it's time for more gnomes

i'm settling into a eusocial matriarchy for these guys, specifically inspired by naked mole rats. in a gnome colony there is one breeding female in charge, served by non-breeding individuals mostly made up of her children, and a small harem of breeding males. the size of the harem depends on the overall size of her colony and territory, but they average 3-4 little husbands, and they come from outside the colony. their rutting season is in winter, during which time sexually developed males will leave their birth colonies to find new colonies to join, which is traditionally done by sneaking in and getting the queen's scent on themselves and fucking her. this isn't always easy--any husbands she already has won't be keen to share with a newcomer.
i decided only males have the neck ruffs, which they'd call a beard, but it doesn't grow from their chins. they puff up to display when fighting or scared :)

any female can become a breeding female under the right circumstances, ie death of the queen. a subordinate female can also leave the colony to attempt to start her own, but it would require the support of her own subordinates to amass enough food that she can grow big enough to breed. most gnomes would prefer the security of established colonies, so this doesn't happen very often, especially in areas already densely populated by gnomes.

can non breeding individuals mature into breeding ones if the situation requires? or are they more like bees, whose fates are a little more predetermined? please tell me all about the ecology of gnomes!
