The open world actively ruins the flow of the game, the new combat system is a homogenizing step back, and as for what they DID to Zhang He...Make no mistake about it, this is the worst Dynasty Warriors game of them all, at least as far as mainline entries go.

Not every game should be open world. Also... What have the done to Zhang He?! His claws were so rad...

The joy of an Open World game is the exploration. It's the feeling that there will be something fun or even just interesting thing around the next corner. Fallout, Skyrim, and a few others do this wonderfully. Auto-filling a map with trees and hills just missing the point entirely. You just can't fake making things interesting. There's no money saving short-cut.
Merging with Tecmo did Koei no good, a bit like square merging with Enix it just brought in what seem to be a lot of poor developers and laziness. I have been hoping for innovation in the DW series for year, I generally only buy the empires version but they have been getting thinner and thinner rather than more advanced and interesting for a long time.
8 was an excellent game. I'd go with that.

It looks like some Steam knock-off(( Environments are so generic, that they make me think of asset flips or something.

For the past few years, I came to the realization that the Dynasty Warriors games have been coming out with less and less content with every iteration. I recently bought Dynasty warriors 8 xtreme legends, I was very disappointed due to me expecting something similar to the DW xtreme legends 3. A game where you can create a character, choose a hero to serve, then raise up the ranks and face choices for betrayals and interesting story arcs. I am a very saddened and frustrated fan that just gave up on that franchise.

Well, as guilty pleasures go, at least the new Earth Defense Force 5 looks awesome (and awesomely cheesy)

I expected it to be pretty bad and boring considering how horrible their background areas have been in the past and open world puts a big focus on that.
