Just what the hell's going on with Darkest Dungeon? It's been going through a firestorm of criticism lately, and it seems like Early Access lies at the root of the problem.

I still really like the game. Ironically my frustration resistance is actually not high enough for it but it's still fun and that last balancing patch really made a huge difference. I'm also glad, they removed the PROT from the Maggots (from Hell). Even though I still consider the beginning of the game the most difficult part. I'm curious about the finished product.
Why not just make two modes? Select at the beginning of the game if you want hard mode or not. A simple difficulty setting, invented decades ago, could solve this problem entirely, I think.

I really loved the game, until I reached level five and started going after the highest level bosses. At that point it became so difficult it just wasn't fun anymore. That was before some of the changes Jim mentions though, so I might revisit it...
