Episode 94: The Last War Chief
🕑 Added 2022-09-19 18:11:07 +0000 UTCLakota history has been the subject of many episodes of History on Fire. Today, however, we’ll see history through the eye of their traditional enemies, the Crow. Part of the episode will cover the history and culture of the Crow nation up to the late 1800s. The other part will move into the 1900s and follow the tale of Joe Medicine Crow, the last man to achieve the status of war chief of the Crow Nation thanks to the coups he counted during WWII against the Nazi. The fact that Joe Medicine Crow’s story has not been made into a movie is a crime. I can’t fix that, but at least I can dedicate a podcast to him.

Such a beautiful addition to the saga you have created concerning the plains Indians lives, now more completely. I am so grateful and sometimes tear up during the podcast at how proud I am to learn of a history almost erased. Thank you thank you, you do us all a service at illuminating such incredible, outstanding, and magnificent histories for us to learn from. I just signed up for Patreon, however have been listening since I read On the Warriors Path last year - I have devoured every single episode. I am eternally grateful and happily support your work. Once finances allow, I intend to increase because as a lover of knowledge and librarian-like-cataloguing myself, I am so impressed. From the very bottom of my heart I am not exaggerating when I say you have touched my life in a way that has made me a better person. I share these wonderful, enriching tales and histories with everyone around my sphere. Truly, I am grateful for you and want you take in my highest praise. These stories have gotten me through depression and hard times, because I was able to learn of heroic tales and see the human element of struggle persevere. Blessings on your next story and research journey!

thank you so much!

As someone who grew up alongside natives I can tell how difficult it is to do this right and with context not fetishizing or denigrating. This was truly impressive work.
