Arthur woke slowly on the wide bed, his eyelids fluttering open, confusion clouded his mind at first, but he quickly realized he must have passed out. His head throbbed with a dull ache that pulsed behind his eyes, he grabbed at it with one hand, pressing his palm against his forehead as he pushed himself up into a sitting position. The room spun for a moment before settling.
"Arthur!" a girl shouted.
A moment later something tackled him, a warm body colliding with his chest that knocked him back against the pillows. Arthur's arms wrapped around her instinctively, recognition flooding him as he caught the scent of her hair and felt the familiar way she fit against him. It was Mira, his sister, his wife, pressing close to him and near squeezing the life out of I'm.
"Mira," he croaked out.
She pulled back just enough to look at him, tears streaming down her cheeks as she cupped his face with both hands. "You're here," she whispered, her voice breaking. "You're really here."
Arthur hugged her back fiercely, burying his face in her shoulder while he held her as close as he could. "I was so worried about you," he said, words tumbling out in a rush. "Every day without knowing where you were or if you were safe... it tore me apart. I missed you so much, Mira, more than I could ever express with words."
Mira clung to him tightly, her fingers digging into his back. "I missed you too," she replied, sobbing softly against his neck. "I knew you would come back to me. I never stopped believing that, even when everything seemed hopeless, we are made to be together, nothing can separate us for long."
Rhaella stood beside the bed, shifting her weight from one foot to the other while she watched the reunion with a small, awkward smile that showed she felt out of place in the moment. Mira kissed him then, over and over, quick presses of her lips against his mouth, his cheeks, his forehead, as if she needed to confirm he was real. She squeezed him tighter with each one, her body trembling while joy and relief poured out of her.
Arthur laughed softly between kisses, his hands stroking her back. "Easy," he said gently, "let me up a bit so I can breathe."
Mira shook her head stubbornly, burying her face against his chest again. "No," she mumbled. "Not yet."
Arthur chuckled deeper, the sound rumbling in his chest, he wrapped his arms around her waist before lifting her easily with him as he sat up fully. Mira squealed in surprise, her legs kicking playfully while she clung to his shoulders. He settled on the side of the bed where Rhaella had stood moments before, Mira still in his lap with her arms looped around his neck. "What happened?" he asked, turning toward Rhaella while he kept one arm around Mira's waist.
Rhaella smoothed her robe as she spoke. "While I was talking to the guard you fell over suddenly and started shaking for a moment," she explained calmly. "Then you passed out completely. I did not want to call the maester, since there would be questions about why a young man was in my chambers at night. So when Mira arrived, we moved you to the bed together and waited until you woke."
Arthur nodded slowly, though his attention drifted inward as the memories resurfaced clearly. 'So those were flashes from my previous life,' he thought, pieces of a world with strange devices and stories that mirrored this one in eerie ways. Did that mean he lived inside a tale now, one he had read about in books and watched on screens? The implications unsettled him, but what stood out most was the tragedy ahead for the woman before him; marriage to her brother, abuse, loss, and the burning of Summerhall that would claim so many Targaryens. The rest blurred, wars and dragons and endings he could not fully recall.
'Perhaps more shards exist close by?' he mused silently, with that perhaps he could unlock the full picture and let him change what came.
"Arthur?" Mira said, her hand touching his cheek to draw him back.
He blinked, snapping out of his thoughts. "Sorry," he said quickly, offering them both a reassuring smile. "I am well now, truly. More than well." He looked at Mira as he spoke the last words, his hand squeezing hers.
"I was so worried about you," he told her again, his voice softening. "I am sorry for everything... for trusting Willem, for putting you in danger by bringing you to the city. If I had seen through him sooner—"
Mira shook her head firmly, placing a finger against his lips. "It was not your fault," she insisted. "Willem lied to me too. He told me you had been arrested for killing a man in self-defense, that he would work to get you free. That was why I stayed with him... I believed he helped you, perhaps if I were not so foolish I would've seen through his lies." She paused, meeting his eyes. "But don't worry, he never hurt me, not like that. I think he planned to make me his wife, with all the gifts he gave and the feasts... it was a little unsettling."
Arthur scowled at the thought, his hand cupping her face gently. "He will never touch you again," he promised. He was hopefully rotting in the seven hells after Arthur put a dagger in him.
Rhaella cleared her throat lightly, stepping forward to hand Arthur a fresh glass of water from the bedside table. "Was it you who slaughtered everyone at his manse?" she asked curiously.
Arthur hesitated, glancing between the two women.
Rhaella assured him quickly. "You will not face trouble from me," she said. "I only want to know."
Arthur nodded then. "Yes," he admitted. "I went there to rescue Mira and kill Willem for what he did to us. When I arrived, she had already escaped and was under your protection, but I only found that out after I killed his guard and him."
Rhaella smirked faintly. "And that led to your foolish plan to break into the Red Keep," she observed.
Arthur rubbed the back of his neck, embarrassment coloring his cheeks. "Yes," he conceded. "It seemed like the only way at the time."
Mira did not care about the detailsc she leaned against him with pure joy radiating from her, overjoyed simply to have him there. Arthur hugged her close again, murmuring assurances into her hair. "We will never be separated again," he promised. "I swear it."
Rhaella watched them for a moment longer, then smiled softly at Mira. "I am going for a walk," she announced, moving toward the door. "I will fetch more water and give you two some time alone."
Mira met her eyes with silent gratitude, a look that conveyed everything words could not. Rhaella nodded in return and slipped out quietly, the door closing behind her with a soft click.
Alone now in the chamber, Arthur and Mira finally had the space to rediscover one another. The wooden door had barely clicked shut behind Rhaella when Mira's eyes locked onto Arthur's, a spark of longing igniting between them. She shifted in his lap, her small hands tracing the lines of his jaw, his neck, as if memorizing him anew. "Arthur," she whispered, "every day without you... it was like a piece of my soul had been torn away. I woke up reaching for you in the dark, and the emptiness clawed at me. I missed your voice, your touch, the way you made me feel."
Arthur's heart ached at her words, mirroring his own torment. He pulled her closer, his fingers weaving into her golden hair. "And I you, Mira." His voice cracked, and he leaned in, capturing her lips in a gentle kiss that quickly deepened as the floodgates of their separation burst open.
Mira responded with fervor, her mouth opening to him, her tongue tentatively brushing against his. The kiss was a storm of pent-up desire, slow at first.
