I was in a weird mood as we went through the exercises. The deal with Morgan was bad enough, but Hennings really pissed me off. The guy just wanted to bust me, never mind that I was operating within the rules. It made me want to play defense so I could put some pretty boy on his ass. Guess I'd just have to settle for some defensive player.
My mindset carried over into position drills, which I once again went through with the quarterbacks. Everyone seemed surprised that my passes actually went where they were supposed to. I don't know why Coach Tucker huddled with Coach Turner, Coach Sullivan and Coach McEntire just because I hit a deep out.
Marshawn was his usual chatty self as the scout offense prepared to show the defense more of the Wildcats' scheme. We started with the basics and progressed to the fullback and wingback traps with no one getting too close to me. Then Coach McEntire called a toss sweep to the left.
As we lined up, the speakers around the field cut loose with a screaming guitar riff I recognized. It was a Travis Tritt cover of an old Elvis song. While the song was from the Fat Elvis era, I was channeling Young Elvis. My left leg started shaking in time with the music. I would have done an Elvis sneer, but that was pretty much impossible with my mouthpiece in. Still, I couldn't resist joining in after the intro.
"Well, I play an old guitar from nine ’til half past one," I called out. "I'm just tryna make a livin' watchin' everybody else havin' fun. Well, I don't miss much if it happens on a dancehall floor. Mercy, look what just walked READYGO!"
I took the snap, tossed to Rivera and headed around the left end, where Jerome Jackson was in position to cut the play off. I don't think he appreciated the way I slammed into him. My left shoulder sure as hell didn't.
"You betta check yoself before ya wreck yoself," Jerome snarled, pushing me off him.
"I was a little bitty baby when my poppa hit the skids," I hissed, bouncing to my feet and staring him in the eye. "Momma had a time tryna raise nine kids. She told me not to stare ’cause it was impolite. She did the best she could to try to raise me right."
"This white boy crazy!" Jerome shouted.
"Remember that," I snarled.
"What's going on here?" Coach Tucker barked.
"Just running the play the way it's designed," I said, still staring down Jerome.
"Get back in the huddle, Robinson," Coach commanded.
Then Marshawn had to add his two cents.
"Supermodel find hisself in real trouble, he don't watch out," the linebacker griped.
"What, ya gonna sic Miss Aldridge on me?" I shot back. "Bring it. I think I'd buy a ticket to watch that myself."
"Easy, there, Robinson," Coach McEntire drawled, grabbing me by the arm. "Save a little somethin' for the game. That includes our defense. And you know it'll be at least that bad Friday, Jackson. Their quarterback goes about 210. Played linebacker for ’em last year. He likes to hit people."
The coaches got things settled down enough for us to huddle and Coach McEntire called the same play to the right. I didn't call out lyrics this time — I didn't recognize the song, but it sounded like Ozzy — and ran the play. Darius tried to avoid me, but dodged into an unfortunate position. My right shoulder connected with his crotch. Even with a cup, he dropped like a rock.
"Dammit, Robinson!" Coach Fuller screamed as Darius struggled to get to his knees with a groan.
"That one wasn't my fault," I responded. "I was aiming for his torso."
"You need to improve your aim!" the defensive coordinator snapped.
The twos subbed in while Darius tried to regain his composure. Or get his balls out of his throat. Something like that. I was under orders not to hit anyone "too hard" as we ran the plays again. Both Jackie Nelson and Edgar Gonzales, the dude I'd speared in the chin back in August, made sure to not let me get that close to them.
We progressed through more plays. The buck sweep to the wingback worked well enough that Coach Fuller had us walk through it a couple of times as he explained each defenders' responsibilities. The defense did better when we resumed full-speed.
Then we got into the pass plays. The Wildcats ran very few straight dropbacks, usually a fly route to the wide receiver with the halfback serving as a safety valve in the flat. I checked down a lot more times than I went deep. There were a couple of screens to the halfback to the strong side, but their big hitters came off play action.
The one I really liked was a bootleg off the wingback buck sweep with the tight end running a seam route. It was an easy enough pass for me to make as long as it was to the right. Going left forced me to slow down and square up.
The main thing was I just had to get rid of the ball before the ends got to me. Darius, especially, looked like he wanted a little payback. Well, he could wait three months like I had. And I'd try to visit my estate in the Caymans about then.
The play worked quite well, forcing Coach Miller to huddle with the secondary to review their duties. The strong safety usually had the tight end, but was also charged with run support. The cornerbacks had to recognize and get in position.
Once again, the defense started performing better after getting a couple of looks.
We finally made it to the special teams segment without me taking any serious hits I didn't initiate. We worked on the same fakes we had Monday, I practiced fair catching punts and watched kickoffs go to just about everyone but me. I noticed Marshawn stayed in his lane instead of trying to flatten me on the kickoffs.
Gassers, huddle, "TEAM!" on three. Time for a shower and study hall. So, of course, Coach Tucker had other ideas.
"My office, Robinson," he commanded.
I stripped out of my pads as I followed Coach inside, dropping them and my helmet outside his office. Shoulda removed my cleats as well, but then he'd probably complain about my stinky feet.
"What is your problem today?" he barked as the door slammed closed loud enough to cover his voice.
"It's Tuesday," I said. "I started catching crap from people before I even got to school and it hasn't stopped. I went off campus for lunch to avoid trouble in the cafeteria and Hennings still jumped my butt because I wasn't in ISS."
"And that's just one complaint I've had about you today," Coach said. "You're lucky your aunt and Dunwoody took your side. But I won't put up with you taking your frustrations out on the defense. We're in the playoffs and I need everyone pulling in the same direction."
"Then tell the defense to behave," I snapped back. "A little birdie told me they were making bets on who can hit me the hardest without getting 50 gassers. Figured I'd get in a preemptive strike."
A knock on the door interrupted us before Coach gave me another 50 gassers. Coach Sullivan and Coach Turner had some things about the offense to go over.
"Get your shower and get to study hall," Coach Tucker ordered me.
"Yes, sir," I said, stepping out to collect my gear.
"What got into him?" I heard Coach Sullivan ask as the door started to close. "He looked like a real quarterback, the few plays I saw. Those passes had some zip."
I completed stripping, stowed my gear and arranged my laundry as other receivers studiously ignored me. I guess they didn't want to deal with the crazy white boy any more than the defense.
After racing through a shower and dressing — the fleece and letter jacket together proved a bit too much for indoors — I lugged the backpack back to the team room. I hung the jacket on the back of a chair before getting with Chuck to go over the assignment and his notes from this morning, then got with Riley to go over notes for Western Civ and Chemistry. Elise joined us for the Chemistry, comparing answers on the assignment.
A quick session with Cody got me Zoe's notes in Algebra II and several of us repeated the process we'd employed yesterday for English IV. I seemed to be ahead of the classes as far as reading the play. Most only got the first scene of Act II today.
I was packing my things when a shadow fell across me. I looked up to see Morgan, Elise and Riley, all with crossed arms and scowls.
"You've put this off long enough," Morgan snapped.
"Well, I'm going to have to put it off just a little longer," I shot back, causing the scowls to intensify. "Hey, Jed! Hank! Lloyd! Somebody wanna tell me what really happened at lunch?"
"What's up, dude?" Jed asked, coming over with several other linemen in tow. "It was just a normal lunch except no crazy females attacked you. That part was kinda nice for a change."
"I've received conflicting reports," I said. "Morgan made it sound like y'all bullied her into going for extra helpings of meatloaf. Dunwoody claimed she was terrorizing the entire table. I suspect the truth is somewhere in the middle. Enlighten me."
"It wasn't like that," Morgan mumbled, turning beet red. "I can't help it if you got the wrong idea."
"Nah, dude," Jed chuckled. "We were just razzin' everybody like we always do."
"She gave as good as she got, though," Brad Elliott said. "Better than she got, most of the time."
"So, no one coerced her into getting extra?" I asked.
"I asked her to get me some since she was goin' back for seconds," Hank Preston admitted sheepishly. "She said the lunch lady would only give out one serving at a time, so she made two trips."
I turned my gaze to Morgan, who was starting to fidget. Man, I wish I could do the arched eyebrow thing.
"I was hungry, OK?" she snapped. "I missed breakfast because of you."
"And how did I cause you to miss breakfast?" I asked. "I wasn't even in the neighborhood. I stayed at the apartment last night."
"Kacie called me," my first official girlfriend admitted, though not as sheepishly as Hank. "She had to tell me the news about you. She heard it from your Aunt Karen."
"What news?" Lloyd asked.
"Nothing important," I said hastily. "Dr. Robinson is going to move into the house y'all helped me with Saturday. My grandmother's furnishing the place. I went over there last night to make some recommendations and requests."
"You still owe us, dude," Jed snarked. "Took Chuck off to Cookshack and didn't even tell us!"
"I needed Chuck's help for an Economics assignment and lunch is only 45 minutes," I said. "There wasn't time to invite everybody."
"Still," my buddy snorted. "I think ya oughta host our next movie night. I'd like to see one on that big screen."
"Clear it with Coach Tucker first," I said. "We don't want Hazel Thackeray causing more trouble. Are you ladies ready to go? Any ideas for dinner? I'm ready to eat."
"Marie is getting sandwiches from that place she likes," Morgan said, not sounding the least bit chagrined about her behavior. "I'll ride with Elise and Riley. Marie wants us to get enough diet soda for all the girls."
"And how many is that supposed to be?" I asked rising from my seat and shouldering the backpack, making sure to grab my letter jacket.
"We don't know yet," Elise said. "Marie said to get at least a case to make sure there's enough for everybody. We can leave the leftovers in your icebox."
"Damn, how many girlfriends that boy got?" someone whispered behind me as I held the door for the ladies. "No wonder he actin' like a prick."
"Just think how bad he'd be if he didn't have ’em all to keep ’im happy," Jed snorted. "And remember, when Reno Hightower was a prick, he was the greatest quarterback in the history of south Kern County.”
I just ignored the shit-talk and escorted the girls to Elise's Camry. I was out of earshot before anyone could remind Jed that I wasn't a quarterback and we weren't anywhere near south Kern County.
"You go straight there," Morgan commanded as she climbed in. "We'll be along just as soon as we go by a grocery store, maybe 15-20 minutes."
"Yes, ma'am," I sighed, turning for the Beemer.
I figured the letter jacket would be safe in the trunk with my backpack. And, since I hadn't caught enough shit today, I called Mom as I pulled out of the senior lot. The call went directly to voicemail.
"Hey, Mom, this is Gary," I said after the beep as I waited for traffic to clear enough to turn onto the street. "Just wanted to let ya know I'm still alive. I have all my homework done and am headed to my house. I'll probably stay at the apartment tonight. Say hi to Dad for me."
Now we'd just have to see if she got the message. I'd done my part and followed Dad's orders.
It was a little after 7 when I pulled around the corner at Arlene's. Jan's Escalade was parked on the street, telling me Bethany was here. Kacie's Rover was in the drive. Karen's Mercedes was parked in the garage, making me think she was planning to stay here tonight. I'd better not fuck her if she was.
I went ahead and parked in the alley. I took my jacket and backpack to the apartment, which was locked an unoccupied, before going back across the alley and entering the house through the back door. Maybe the girls wouldn't fight over the jacket if they didn't see it.
"Hi, Honey, I'm home," I said quietly enough that I wasn't expecting a response.
"We're in here, Daddy," Marie called out from the kitchen. "Food's almost ready."
I reached the kitchen to find half a dozen of the women in my life operating an assembly line. Marie was putting plates — I'd have to ask her which cabinet they were kept in — along the counter on the outside wall. Kacie, Bethany and Staci followed with to-go containers from the sandwich shop, each placing a quarter of a bigger-than-your-head special on a plate. Ny'Quesha and Jo followed them, scooping sides onto the plates. Looked like potato salad and pasta salad. At least I'd get plenty of carbs out of the meal.
"Welcome home, Master," Jo chirped, breaking out of line to greet me with a kiss. "Did you have a good day at school?"
"Eh, good enough, I guess," I said, fighting not to laugh at being called Master and reminded of my schoolboy status in the same breath. "How was your day? Everything going all right with the shelter?"
"Kinda like you, good enough," my second pet said. "A few of those girls are struggling to adjust to their new reality. Dr. Ramakrishnan's got a lot of work ahead of her."
"Who's talking about me?" Chanda asked, entering the kitchen from the front of the house. "My ears are burning."
The psychologist had removed the Buddy Holly glasses, but still had her hair in a bun and her blouse fully buttoned. She was still devastatingly sexy as she sashayed toward me, hips swaying provocatively.
"Welcome home, Sahib," she purred seductively before looping her arms around my neck and laying a scorcher on me.
"That's enough, you two," Karen snapped, sounding like one of the teachers on hall duty as she followed the Punjabi bint into the kitchen, which was getting rather crowded. "It's time to eat."
"Sahib?" I gasped once Chanda removed her tongue from my mouth.
"Marie calls you Daddy, Jo calls you Master and Lupita calls you Patron, so I get to call you Sahib," Chanda smiled, keeping her arms around my neck and those tits pressed against my body. "It's what my people called their British overlords during the Raj. It basically means 'sir.'"
"But it can also be interpreted to mean master," Karen groused, grabbing a stack of red SOLO cups off the counter and edging toward the fridge. "He doesn't need any encouragement, especially after that stunt he pulled this afternoon. Shoo, you two! Go sit at the table. There are too many people in here."
"What stunt did he pull?" Kacie asked as Chanda and I tried to maneuver through the throng to the dining area.
I managed to look over the living room long enough to see the two recliners set off the ends of the couch. I was only mildly surprised my grandfather wasn't still seated in one.
"He basically dared a teacher to send him to ISS," Karen said, filling cups at the ice dispenser. "The man was totally in the wrong, I admit, but students shouldn't take that tone with faculty."
"What tone?" Ny'Quesha asked as I took a seat at the near end of the table — did that make it the head or the foot? — and Chanda slid into my lap with a giggle.
"The I've-got-enough-money-and-connections-to-ruin-your-life-without-blinking tone," Karen said as Chanda stole a smooch. "It sounded way too much like my father, just browbeating people into submission."
"Sounds like something my dad would do," Staci said.
"Sounds kinda hot," Bethany giggled. "I like it when he takes charge."
"Actually, it was kinda hot," Karen admitted, sounding a bit bashful, "but that doesn't make it right. He didn't have to be so heavy-handed."
I lost interest in the conversation behind me as Chanda went in for another kiss, placing my hand on a breast as she sucked out some more brain cells. I undid two buttons on her blouse and was sliding a finger inside a bra cup when Marie interrupted the fun.
"You're going to have to move, Doctor," my first pet snapped, setting a plate down in front of us. "Gary can't eat with you sitting in his lap. You can sit around the corner."
Chanda complied with a whine of frustration. From the flush on her face and the two points tenting the front of her blouse, I got the idea she'd been enjoying our little makeout session.
"Thank you, Marie," I coughed, rearranging things in my pants as the little waif returned to the kitchen.
"In fact, why don't you sit down here with me, Chanda?" Karen "suggested" as she brought out cups of ice. "We can let the high school girls sit next to Gary. And do up your blouse."
"You're no fun," Chanda grumped under her breath, reminding me of Karen's reaction the night Aunt Patty had busted us in the ballroom at the country club.
The other girls, now all wearing their chokers, started bringing out plates and cups as Morgan came through the front door, followed by Elise and Riley, each carrying two sixpacks of diet soda. They also wore their chokers.
"Just in time," Kacie chirped as the newcomers set their burdens on the table. "We've got plates and cups of ice on the counter."
I held off on eating until everyone returned. Marie brought me a glass of tea to go with my meal. I was not expecting the little waif to claim my lap to sit on as her reward. Chanda was not pleased.
"Karen gets to show him the goodies and you get to sit in his lap, but I can't do either?" the latest addition to my harem whined. "That's not fair!"
For some reason, Chanda sounded a lot like Kirsten when she didn't get her way on some matter.
"I think he saw enough goodies last night to last him a while," Karen said with a bright blush. "He needs to save something for Friday's game."
"And for after the game," Ny'Quesha giggled.
"I already ate," the little waif smirked defiantly, cutting off a bit of sandwich and stuffing it my mouth before I could comment on the situation. "I sit in Daddy's lap and feed him all the time."
"Good thing Lupita's still at the shelter," Jo snorted. "We really would have a fight on our hands."
Morgan took command before things went completely off the rails.
"Is this everybody?" she asked before turning to me with an outstretched hand. "Give me your phone."
I managed to pull my phone out of its pocket and chew as Marie scooped up a forkful of pasta salad. I slid the device over to Morgan without unlocking it. She knew the code, anyway.
The brainy little elf poked at the screen a few times and set the phone on the table, turning on the speaker as the ringing started. It didn't take two full rings on our end before whoever Morgan called answered.
"About time you called, Sugar," Arlene's voice purred over the speaker. "I was just about to have my detail contact your detail."
"We just sat down to eat, Arlene," Morgan answered for me as Marie fed me pasta salad. "Gary's got a mouthful of food at the moment and can't talk."
"Is everyone there?" Jan asked over the phone.
"Not quite," Staci said. "Sherry said she had too much homework, Erin's at the women's shelter with Lupita and Bonnie didn't want to drive in from Cedar Springs on a school night. I think she had a basketball game to cheer at, anyway."
"And Midori's still waiting for her grandfather to visit," Morgan added.
"That still sounds like a quorum of voting members," Arlene said. "All right, let's get this show started. This meeting of Gary's Girls is called to order. It seems we have some new business."
"I think it's pretty much fait accompli that Dr. Chanda is in after Gary popped her cherry last night," Bethany said, surprising me that she had such a phrase in her vocabulary.
"Chanda, anything to say in your defense?" Arlene asked.
"At least I didn't make a move on him the day I met him, unlike some people I've heard about," the psychologist snarked. "I waited two whole weeks!"
"Touché," the redhead conceded, "but some of these girls have been waiting way longer than that. Poor Sherry's about convinced herself it's never going to happen."
"I know the feeling," Riley muttered.
"What was I supposed to do?" Chanda asked. "He was right there, giving me that look."
"What look?" Staci asked.
"The one that absolutely screams, 'Girl, you are sooo going to get fucked and I am going to make you like it whether you want to or not!'" Marie said as she stuffed more food in my mouth.
I was starting to think these ladies didn't want me to say a word in my defense and had devised a strategy to prevent me doing so.
"I'm sure you've all seen it," Marie continued. "Lupita still hasn't gotten over seeing it last week. You either fight, flee or fuck. Most of us fuck and like it. Riley's the only one here who hasn't yet and that's just because I walked in on them before things went too far and sent her home."
There was suddenly a change in the air and several flushed faces. I had a hard time believing I could affect them that way with just an expression. I didn't even know I was making it. I think these girls were just horny to begin with.
"Yeah," Bethany sighed, squirming in her seat. "I can't wait to see that look again. I walked funny for days last time."
"Don't brag," Arlene snapped. Well, she wasn't getting much action since she'd become pregnant.
"Look, ever since Kunal married that skank Neha, Gary's the one man I've met who I felt was worthy of me," Chanda said. "It was going to happen, it was just a matter of time."
"Who are Kunal and Neha?" Kacie asked. "Are they from your hometown?"
"Kunal Nayyar and Neha Kapur," Chanda said simply, as if we all should know the names.
"Who's that?" Ny'Quesha asked.
"He plays Raj Koothrappali on 'The Big Bang Theory,'" I managed to say before Marie could silence me with more food.
"He's much less nerdy off camera," Chanda said as some of the girls wrinkled their noses. "Actually, he's rather hunky. But he married a former Miss India a few years back."
"How many years back?" Jan asked as Marie forced another bite into my mouth.
"Six or seven," Chanda said. "I was about 17 when it happened, old enough to marry. The worst part is she's Punjabi! If he wanted a Punjabi bint, I lived much closer to Hollywood! She was still in New Delhi!"
Our discussion of missed opportunities with Hollywood crushes was interrupted by a beep from my phone.
"It's your mother, Gary," Morgan said, poking at the screen. "Good evening, Mrs. Robinson. I've added you to a call with Arlene, so feel free to take a strip of hide off him. That's basically what we're doing already."
You can do conference calls on my phone? I did not know that. I'll have to ask Morgan how she did it.
"What'd he do now?" my mother asked with exasperation.
"Went out and found another girlfriend," Elise laughed. "Dr. Chanda!"
"Gary," Mom sighed, the exasperation seeming to increase. "I taught you better than that. You're supposed to respect women!"
First, I did not go out and find her. She was in my house that I bought with my money (well, Alejandro de la Vega's money, if we're being honest, but it was mine now). Second, I have worlds of respect for women. It's not my fault so many seemed to know they could lure me into bed rather easily and took advantage of that knowledge.
And I would have said that, too (or at least some of that), if Marie hadn't kept stuffing food in my mouth.
"How much homework do you have?" Mom asked.
"Gary can't speak just yet," Marie called out. "He needs to chew and swallow his food first. We don't want him getting in trouble for talking with his mouth full."
"If only that was the worst of his sins," Mom said. "Tell him to chew fast."
I honestly tried to. Then Marie stuck a forkful of potato salad in my mouth. At least it was the creamy kind — almost the same consistency as mashed potatoes — and not the chunky kind. It didn't require much chewing.
A swig of tea made swallowing the food easier. A second helped me cleanse my mouth enough that I wouldn't spit crumbs on Marie as I spoke. I took a third just for the hell of it. These women would just have to wait before they tore into me.
"OK," I said, running my tongue along my gums in search of any remnants, "as I said in my voicemail, which it sounds like you didn't listen to, I've finished all my assignments for the week. I'll turn in the last ones in the morning. That'll give me the rest of the week to work on a Creative Writing project for Prof. Silverberg, study for my Algebra II test and read ahead in other subjects."
"Who's Prof. Silverberg?" Mom asked.
"Mrs. Cohen's husband," I said. "He teaches writing at the university. She's put him in charge of me since I'm in Independent Study. I have to have 5,000 words for him by Saturday."
"Don't just goof off the rest of the week," Mom commanded. "Use your time wisely."
"WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK I'VE BEEN DOING?!?!?!" I shouted, almost dumping Marie off my lap. "Did you not hear me? I've done a week's worth of homework in two days and have plenty to keep me busy the next three days!"
"Don't yell ..." Mom started.
"Then pay attention!" I snapped, cutting her off. "I'm getting damn tired of people wanting to take me down for the crime of being Gary Robinson. I've done nothing wrong."
"Gary, calm down," Karen said. "She's your mother, not Craig Hennings."
"Who's that?" Mom asked.
"A teacher who mistakenly thought Gary was supposed to be in ISS," Karen said. "Tried to bust Gary for being out during class when he was going to get something from his locker. Gary went off on him like Daddy would have."
"Then he went off on the defense in practice," Morgan said. "He knocked a couple of starters around like they were the scout team. The coaches didn't know whether to be mad or impressed."
"Look," I said, shifting Marie off my lap and rising from the chair, "I've got things to do. Y'all decide whatever the hell you're going to. I'll be at the apartment."
I was through the kitchen and out the back door in a flash. I really need to find a place no one else would know about for times like this.
I let myself into the apartment, grabbed my backpack and took up station at the little table. The laptop was extracted and powered up. Maybe I could find some real estate listings online.
I just sat there and stewed for I don't know how long, simply staring at the screensaver until it went black. Then I stewed and stared a while longer. A rattle at the door finally roused me.
"Good, you're here," Marie said upon entering. "I brought you your phone."
"Thank you," I grunted.
"Did you get enough to eat?" she asked.
"I'm fine," I grunted.
"We're all worried about you, especially your mother," the little waif said, crawling into my lap and giving me a hug. "I don't like seeing you like this, Daddy."
"Then tell people, especially my mother, to back off," I snapped. "Yeah, I fucked Chanda. So what? It's not like I've tried to hurt anyone, but you'd think I was some kind of mass murderer the way folks were acting today."
"I'm sorry, Daddy," Marie whispered
"You should be," I snarled. "That little stunt of yours Sunday was precisely the kind of thing I don't need and there's been a lot worse than that since then. And that deal tonight with Chanda was pretty rude of you."
"You'd have fucked her right there on the table if I hadn't!" my submissive bitch protested, squirming in my lap.
"Jealous?" I snorted.
"Yes, but that's not the point," she pouted. "The other girls don't need to see that."
"Maybe you should've brought them over here with you," I growled, pushing the girl off my lap and standing. "They probably don't need to see this, either!"
"Daddy!" Marie squealed as I grabbed her by the arm and dragged her the few steps to the bed.
"Quiet!" I barked, sitting on the bed and pulling my first pet face-down across my lap.
