"Hmm... so what exactly is 'work' to begin with?"
As usual, Sora and Shiro, who abandoned their duties as kings to immerse themselves in games, were approached by Steph, who, as always, told them to work. Sora slowly posed the question...
"Staying cooped up in a room playing games certainly isn't it..."
Steph, somewhat exasperated and clearly showing the fatigue from that very work, received a continuation from Sora.
"Why? If you earn an income by playing games in a room, isn't that 'work'?"
"...Eh? Oh, you were earning an income?"
Indeed, if an income is being earned, then that constitutes respectable work, but—
"No? Not a penny earned."
"Oh, is that so♥ Then let me say it again—get to work!"
At Steph's scream, demanding the return of even a moment's thought of apologizing—
"But, there's a possibility of earning an income in the future. Then this is still 'work'."
Sora simply shook his head in resignation and spoke.
"Let's say, for example, I was a novelist."
"…Huh."
"To earn an income as a novelist, one must first come up with a concept for their work. There would be a lot of research involved, right? Then you start on the manuscript—write it, and then complete it, right? Next, you submit the completed work to a competition or publish it online. Or if you already have an editor, you show it to them. Either way, you win the evaluation from readers or editors that 'this work is worth paying for'... and then finally income is generated. So here's the crucial question—answer carefully."
That is to say‼
"Until you win that evaluation, or if you never win it—are you not working?"
"————⁉"
Then, are unsuccessful novelists not working?
If there's a long gap until publication—if a novelist writes slowly, are they not working in that period⁉
Faced with such a profound question, Steph stuttered for a good few seconds before—
"I, I think activities done in anticipation of earning an income can be called 'work'... But! The two of you staying cooped up playing games all day currently have no such prospects, right⁉"
Not fooled! She asserted strongly—
"What if we said we have plans 'to become professional gamers'?"
"H, Huh⁉"
Sora instantly replied to such an expected counterargument!
"For example, by collaborating with Fairy and 'streaming games'‼ If we start earning revenue, then⁉ The act of immersing ourselves in games now is a preparation period—akin to the 'manuscript writing period' for novelists. With this in mind, let me ask again. What would you call what we're doing—if not 'work'?"
Indeed, Steph, albeit reluctantly, admitted.
Work, after all, is an activity that mutually contributes to society and oneself.
But whether that activity contributes mutually is not always clear in the preparation stage.
Moreover, Sora and Shiro are kings of a country in "Disboard," where everything is decided by games.
Immersing themselves in games can be considered an activity of "self-improvement." This activity not only generates income but even contributes to national interests—undoubtedly 'work'.
Accepting this fact in full, Steph deeply nodded—
"Then let me rephrase—also do work other than gaming."
That is—fulfill your duties as kings, Steph told them—but.
"Too troublesome, no thanks♪"
Sora revealed with a smile that the entire conversation could have been settled in just nine characters.
"Say that from the beginningaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa‼"
Thus, Steph once again found herself in distress, echoing her voice throughout the castle of Elkia...
