This was written specifically for the 2013 MF Bunko J School Festival. Since everyone seemed to be embracing their youth with incredible pictures and short stories, I decided to go against the grain and create something that feels like an anti-school festival.

"......A school festival?"
In the throne room of the final kingdom of Imanity, Elchea, the two kings - Sora and Shiro - were abruptly asked this by Steph. Sora replied in a bewildered voice.
"Yes, an event is being planned to celebrate the 102nd anniversary of my alma mater, Elchea National Academy."
To the joyful Steph, Sora managed to swallow his question of why such a half-hearted anniversary would be celebrated, and waited for her to continue.
"Therefore, as the kings, you two are also expected to attend..."
"Um, no."
"...Absolutely not."
That was their immediate answer.
Stunned by their sharp refusal, Steph asked,
"Eh, wh-why?"
Sora responded with a distant look.
"It was a long time ago. When I was sixteen."
"...That's recent, two years ago."
"I was a high school student who couldn't go out without Shiro due to my severe social anxiety and shut-in tendencies... no, that's not right. I was enrolled... or maybe not because I was expelled for non-attendance... but, in name, I was a high school student. Having experienced my first school festival, I had a sudden realization."
Sora says with a serious face,
"I questioned, 'What exactly is a school festival?'"
"...Haa."
As Sora passionately speaks, Steph's gaze grows colder, but she doesn't interrupt.
"If it's a festival, what are we enshrining? Why are they working so hard for these exhibits that are worse than child's play?... And then I realized. I had realized..."
Sora, shaking his fist in shock,
His expression painted with despair, he said,
"I realized that a school festival isn't a sacred event."
"That's a pretty late realization."
"And... isn't it utterly unenjoyable if you're alone?!"
"That realization is also too late..."
Despite Steph's exasperated look, he laughs defiantly,
"But, if that's the case, we have to take measures. It's okay if we're not alone. Since outsiders are allowed at the school festival, I brought Shiro there... but,"
"...Hm..."
But again,
This time, both Sora and Shiro, their faces are painted with despair.
"I had Shiro, and Shiro had me, but what of it? Even if we were two... we were still alone."
The two looked into the distance.
Steph also held her breath at their reaction.
"The piercing eyes of curiosity, the crowd that laughed even at the slightest slip. We ran from the approaching crowd when they saw Shiro. We took each other's hands and fled. And here we finally understood,"
What is a school festival? It is...
"A school festival was... merely a party exclusive for those who live the life!!"
"Which means, if everyone is having a school festival, we will resolutely go to stop it."
"...We'll do, our best."
"We will even overcome our fear of being stared at for this."
"...We'll show, them."
With one sigh towards the brother and sister who have misunderstood the purpose, Steph says,
"I should mention... in the Academy of a world where everything is decided by games, of course, the main event is a game..."
"You should've said that from the beginning, Steph!! A game tournament without us two, the world's best gamers, is..."
"...Utterly ridiculous..."
The two "kings" rise from the throne, defiantly.
"However, if we see any people living the life, we'll use our royal authority to expel them. Let's go, Shiro!!"
"...Yes."
As the two run off hand in hand, Steph thinks to herself,
"...Aren't they, what you call 'living the life'...?"
