I was actually wrong. I somehow expected it to hook the meat by RETRACTING those bulbs and stalks. Creating suction and adhering the meat strongly with vacuum. (Since there are some animals that actually do that in real life. I somehow can't see that a "piercing and expanding" system like this would form enough of a seal to let the clams be TORN out of their attachment point in the shells. They tend to be quite well attached in there.

Evolution seldom adds new things prefering to alter what exists... so hemorrhaging blood to eat is new but not as unrealistic as spontaneously changing species with the extra mass just disappearing. Still curious just how much "magic" is in this world
