The fragmented and echoing voice of the black flagger makes me wonder if they've somehow been made obedient. We know that there's a fungal symbiosis element to the Baxxid in extremis. It's not out of the question to imagine it can be pushed in a different direction instead of becoming a giant nutrient sail. I have imagined a horrible way for the Baxxid to create guards and assassins, and I am not done pouting.
