Nah, if beardy punches he's giving up a two-on-one on his weapon, which means he'll instantly be disarmed. Also Kass is off angle making a strike with either hand with any power difficult.

Wow. Between this and his close-quarters with Brakka, Kass is a pretty good for a common-class soldier. Also, I do like this insight into both his and Elim's character.

Eh, realistically, beardy would let go of his immobilized sword with one hand and either punch Kass in his big mouth or initiate a grapple. Kass has put himself into a bad position here - a better option probably would have been, assuming beardy has too good of a grip on the weapon to disarm him, to use the leverage the weapon bind granted to Kass to trip his opponent; beardy would most likely lose his grip on the weapon trying to catch himself (or from getting the wind knocked out of him as he faceplanted), allowing Kass to disentangle his own weapon and then whack beardy over the head after a quick wind-up of the old meteor hammer. BUT this works better for getting some dialogue in, and matches the way fights typically go in most fiction, while simultaneously showing Kass' inexperience. And I'm not about to really complain about realism in a story where over a hundred pounds of matter can just disappear into thin air due to the previous owner of said matter having a close encounter with zat zhing.

The idea about Elim coming over to help isn't a bad one. When both fighters have their weapons incapacitated and they're in a stalemate, stalling for help by provoking the guy verbally seems like a pretty strong strategy.

The parallels between this page and the "friendly" conversation Kass and Brakka had in the alley post-stabbing really highlight the differences between this Kass and the much more compact Kass of the present day. Here we see Kass running his mouth in the heat of battle when there really isn't any reason to do so. He is good at reading people both then and now, but here it strikes me more as a defense mechanism, and one that isn't serving him very well. By contrast, they did just about as well as they possibly could to handle the Brakka situation in spite of how drastically the odds were stacked against them. Knowing they had no way of winning by force, Kass immediately read the guy and began figuring out ways to break him down. Perhaps they hoped to gain some means by which they could take control of things in some form or another, probably by showing Brakka how pointless his little interrogation was. This failed less because of Kass’s trying and more because there really wasn’t much way to reason with Brakka given his personality. At one point Kass was even able to nearly extract incredibly important information from the guy! At the very least Kass was able to do their part indirectly by unknowingly buying Elim the time needed to regroup and absolutely body the yinglet gang. But yeah, now that Kass is unable to fight or use their looks or brawn to get things done, part of them seems to realize that they need to hone their last remaining weapon: their ability to persuade, interrogate, motivate, and the way things seem to be going, lead.
