They look like fins, so she calls them fins. One of the previous informational "filler" pages noted that baxxids are constantly growing out their stonelike carapace (on their heads and elsewhere) and purposefully trim and shape them, hence why they can come in such a wide array of shapes.

wait, she calls them fins - I always took them as rather rigid parts of the exoskeleton, so horns or spikes. Calling them fins (in a biological context) implies a certain mobility or at least flexibility. Of course, might just be her not knowing a more accurate term. Or since we're at the coast, she might mean it like the rigid fins of a seafaring vessel.
