Andrea is my favourite poet, and I’ve been lucky enough to see her twice already, both times with tears in my eyes and so much appreciation for her voice.
Max isn’t an artsy babe, poetry isn’t her thing, but I really reeeeeeeally wanted her to join me. A poetry slam is a hard sell. So I asked, teased about playing the girlfriend card, sheepishly feeling out if she would be interested. Her response, “Of course. I’d love to. Anything your little heart desires, I’m in. 😘” gave me pause. Funny how I was braced for moaning and complaint, for a begrudged agreement to attend. Funny how I would have accepted it, been grateful for a reluctant date. Funny how effortless she makes it seem to be a loving human.
My last partner ignored my texts and forgot my birthday, made me feel like an afterthought. My ex before that spent years disrespecting me, taking advantage of every kindness. I’m accustomed to running around in circles trying to make people happy, but Max is like “Come sit next to me, stop running, I’m here.”
(I bought two tickets, happy to have her on my calendar in February.)

Andrea Gibson, Denise Jolly, and Sonya Renee came to my college and my friends and I got to meet them. While taking a group pic, she put her arm around me and her hand on that muscle between your neck and shoulder and squeezed. I damn near buckled.
