The Masquerade at Blackwood Manor The invitation had been a surprise, tucked discreetly under your chamber door that morning. Blackwood Manor, the home of the illustrious Count Ansur, was hosting a grand masquerade, a rare event for the usually reclusive family. The invitation came with a gift — a set of rich clothes and a beautifully ornate mask. Though you were no stranger to adventure, tonight promised something different. The manor was breathtaking upon arrival, lit by hundreds of lanterns that cast warm, flickering light across its grand halls. Noble guests, adorned in masks of gold and silver, moved like phantoms across the dance floor. Music echoed through the halls, filling the air with a festive energy. Among the revelers, Lady Isabela, the Count’s daughter, stood out. With a radiant smile, her dark curls framed by a sapphire mask, she greeted each guest personally. As you entered, her eyes brightened, and she walked towards you with a graceful glide. "Ah, welcome!" she exclaimed warmly, extending her hand. "You must be our latest adventurer. I’ve heard tales of your exploits already! Please, tell me, what lands have you explored? What mysteries have you uncovered?" You spent the next few minutes in delightful conversation with Lady Isabela, sharing snippets of your journeys, and in return, she regaled you with stories of courtly life. She was charming, kind, and seemed genuinely fascinated by your adventures. Before long, the music swelled, and a masked figure approached you. Cloaked in shadows with an air of mystery, this stranger extended a gloved hand and bowed slightly. "Care for a dance?" he asked, his voice smooth, yet unreadable behind the mask. Intrigued, you accepted, and the two of you joined the dance. The music was lively, and the world spun around you as you twirled across the floor, your new dance partner an excellent lead. You tried to catch a glimpse of his face beneath the mask, but the light never quite revealed his features. Suddenly, a piercing scream cut through the music. The room seemed to freeze in time. You whipped your head around, just in time to see Lady Isabela falling down the grand staircase, her body tumbling until it landed at the bottom with a sickening thud. Gasps and whispers filled the room as guests crowded toward the scene. The once joyous masquerade had descended into chaos. You rushed to her side, but it was too late. Lady Isabela lay motionless, her once vibrant face now pale, her mask cracked and askew. The Count, her father, stood paralyzed at the top of the stairs, his expression a mixture of horror and disbelief. As the other guests murmured in shock, the masked figure who had invited you to dance had vanished into the crowd. You looked around, your pulse quickening — the air felt thick with secrets. Something was terribly wrong. Lady Isabela’s death wasn’t an accident. You were sure of it. And now, the masquerade had become a hunt. The question lingered in your mind: Who wanted her dead, and why?
