I loved the books when I was a kid. Especially later in the series how it blends Sci-fi and fantasy.

Not intentionally. Client suggested a shoulder dragon, and I ran with it. As I was working on it I did think to myself there was some Pern-ish quality to it. Or Mother of Dragons. But I never really read any of the Pern series. Maybe I should give them a go.

The second one looks reminiscent of Michael Whelan's cover art for the Pern series by Anne McCaffery. Was that anywhere close to your inspiration?
