The anime makes that scene funny for the wrong reasons. In the VN, Okabe had a more emotional and dramatic breakdown, so it feels more logical that Mayuri slapped him. That scene is the equivalent of the Harry Potter scene "Did you put your name in the Goblet of Fire?" XD
