A particular scene has always stuck with me in the 2011 film "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" where they show how numerous mermaids have been caught and tied to stakes in the "jungle pools" half in the water to make their dying slow as they are harvested for their precious tears which are used as part of the ritual tied to the Fountain of Youth. Even when Blackbeard tries to force the captive mermaid Syrena to shed a tear, evoking the cries of other mermaids before her, she remains defiant. It is not until she is reunited with the young missionary Phillip, whom she thought dead, that she sheds a tear of joy which Blackbeard and his crew manage to obtain in a vial before they secure and leave her to die like the mermaids before her.
