Polites was a murder, not a sacrifice. He didn’t purposely die to save others, or try to push others to safety while putting himself in danger. It was sad, tragic, heartbreaking ❤️‍🩹, but not a sacrifice.

Funily enough, I first learned the main storyline of The Odyssey (including the ending) from episodes of Wishbone when I was like 7 back in the 90s 😂 So, my first ever interpretation of Odysseus was...a dog.

I’ve read the Odyssey in a college lit class and I still believe “sacrifice” refers to Polites or the infant. Plus, Tiresias says that he sees “past and future running free.” I believe the “PAST romance” and sacrifice are moments in the past. The other visions are the future.

More seriously, Polites' death can't really be considered a sacrifice. That implies intent, and everyone but Polyphemus was taken by surprise.
