Chapter 54 - Procession

He did his best to clean himself up but didn’t have much success. It was already a great accomplishment he had managed not to tear them on the rough roots. With a good wash, they would turn good as new, hopefully.
The canopy of the great tree shielded the place from direct sunlight, but the humidity was even stronger in the Veeryd jungle. Coupled with the insect buzzing around it was not going to be a pleasant few hours.
Only now Kai realized there had been no insects on the roots of the great tree. Just another mystery to add to the pile.
The hunter was nowhere to be seen, likely keeping an eye on the kids still lost in the maze. The elder, instead, stood staunchly staring at the great tree as if he could glimpse something none of them saw. If the average time was around two hours, it meant some took closer to three hours.
Kai sat as far away as it was reasonably possible without seeming rude. With the elder’s abilities remaining a mystery, he didn’t trust to train even Meditation, much less any mana skill. It was prospecting to be an incredibly tedious time when a brave knight with a blow haircut plowed down next to him.
Without missing a beat, Telu started pestering him not so subtly about the skill he used to get out of the maze. After Kai made it clear he was not going to give him a true answer, Telu just passed to the next topic. It was as if he had saved all the questions and comments he had not been able to ask in the maze and he could now give free rein to his curiosity.
Kai was sure he would know everything there was to know about Greenside by the time they could go back. Not how he would have liked to spend his time if given the choice, but it beat getting crazy for two hours doing literally nothing. He was almost glad to have a little chatterbox to kill time.
If he got lost in his mind right now his thoughts would certainly wander to all the worst-case scenarios of how gods and other supernatural entities could screw him over.
It wasn’t a pleasant wait. Kai would have liked to take a shower or at least jump into the sea, but it was bearable. Telu’s endless stream of words and gossip kept his mind occupied enough to keep the agony of wasting time at aby.
Since when did doing nothing become so hard?
The thin know-all girl he met this morning turned out to be the only other person making it before the one-hour mark. Elder Soluli told them a few words of congratulation before she too decided to join his group.
Her name was Fal and it soon became clear there was some kind of rivalry between her and Telu. They were soon talking over each other and arguing about who knew the juiciest pieces of gossip.
Even in a relatively small town like Greenside, there was a lot. Putting together all the pieces in his head Kai had enough material to write ten seasons of a telenovela. The good news was it spared Kai from being pestered with questions or even participating in the conversation.
The bulk of the children made it out in the second hour. Even the largest group led by the kid with the tracking skill arrived. He seemed to have lost a few people along the way and the ones who’d stuck with him had torn clothes and bruises. Probably scrapings from climbing over the roots and falling. It told a story very different from the easy journey the confident kid had advertised.
Elder Soluli told them a few words each, but no compliments. As the third hour came around, the sun was getting higher in the sky and even in the shade it was getting suffocating. What wouldn’t he give for one of the icy drinks he got at the estate? He’d settle even for a cooling swim into the sea.
A few more people made it out, but they only received scoffs and scorn from the elder. Finally, the hunter came back carrying a girl, who looked small even for a seven-year-old. Her knees were bruised and from her red eyes and tears streaks on her cheeks, she must have cried a lot. This experience would probably turn into a long-lived trauma.
Elder Soluli gave her a disdainful look, his voice harsh. “You bring shame to your family. The spirits don’t favor the ones who give up. There is no bright future ahead of you.”
Yep, this is definitely going to need years of therapy to resolve.
The girl sat on the ground crying. Kai wasn’t sure if the lesson was not giving up or just religious zeal, but that felt pointless and cruel. There was no need to beat someone who was already down. His opinion of the elder fell a step lower, starting to dig underground.
He clenched his fist, but he was not going to start arguing with the elder when they were in the middle of the Veeryd jungle and the only other adult was a hunter that liked him even less.
“Come on,” Kai said to the two chatty fellows that had finally fallen silent. They could at least offer company and a sympathetic look. The other kids left a wide berth around the crying girl, as if afraid the disappointment of the spirits was contagious.
Kai walked up to her and offered his hand. He was not sure she would accept it since they never talked before. The girl slowly looked up at him, her willowy body rocked by loud sobs and her eyes clouded by tears. Instead of taking his hand, the girl directly went for the hug, starting to cry loudly into his shirt.
I guess I can add snot and tears to the things I’ll need to wash off.
Elder Soluli looked at him with contempt. Kai ignored it, he didn’t care about the opinion of an individual he carried no respect for. With a scoff, the mayor turned away, organizing the group for the walk back.
Kai tried to comfort the crying girl, but he was better with logic than emotions. Coming up with a dozen reasons why failing in the maze didn’t matter did not seem to help much.
I’m not good at this. What should I do? Help me!
Telu and Fal, who had been standing by the side, thankfully decided to step in. Kai gladly left them the reins of the situation, but the girl refused to let go of his hand.
Needless to say, the walk back home was very awkward. The seven-year-olds were arranged in order of arrival. Going from cheering and triumphant children at the head to sullen and sas towards the end. His group was the only one breaking the rule. Somehow elder Soluli didn’t tell him to go to the front.
By the time they spotted Greenside, the girl had calmed down but still refused to let go of his hand.
Kai tried to slip away, but the hunter appeared in front of him. “You can not leave yet.”
It soon became clear why they had been arranged in such a way. They had to march through the town to the square before they were allowed to leave. The victors at the head would be praised, while those at the end of the line were humiliated.
This just keeps getting better and better. What a nice way to shape the next generation.
Kai could see Telu and Fal were getting antsy, looking around anxiously. The crying girl had not said a word all the way but was now gripping his hand even more tightly.
I’m going to become a saint.
“Come on, you can go take your place at the front. I’ll remain with her.”
Relief was evident on their faces. With a few words of apology, they ran ahead. Kai was a bit disappointed, but it was understandable. Contrary to him, they lived in Greenside and didn’t have the luxury of leaving it behind. If they stayed at the end of the line everyone would think they performed poorly and didn’t have the favor of Yatei.
Judging from the number of people on the streets watching them pass, everyone in town knew of the ceremony and what their order in line meant. Plenty of subtle and not-so-subtle comments and looks were thrown his way. Some with pity, others with schadenfreude.
This felt like the walk of shame of Cersei in King’s Landing. Thankfully the town was only so big and Kai held his indifferent posture the whole way. Looking ahead and ignoring everyone watching.
Can’t wait to get out of this hellhole.
“You should go ahead. You don’t deserve this treatment.” With barely a whisper, his silent companion finally talked, her voice hoarse from all the crying.
Kai shook his head. “You don’t either, but let them think whatever they want.”
If he went to take his place among the first of the line it would be like admitting he cared about the opinions of the crowd.
I’ve been blessed and approved by one of the two great spirits of the archipelago. I’m well beyond such mortal concerns. He thought jokingly.
It was noon and the town square was packed. All their families were present plus a crowd of nosy people, who wanted to get the latest scoop to gossip in town.
Kai spotted Alana and Ele in the crowd and waved at them. They smiled back, but their expressions faltered when they noticed his position in the parade. It wasn’t disappointment as much as confusion.
Kai turned to the little girl, who had yet to release his hand. “I have to go now. You shouldn’t care about what the elder said. The spirits don’t care about how long you took to escape a stupid maze. All you need to do to have a bright future is hard work and the Guide.”
Damn, that line was cringe.
“Mel.”
“What?”
“My name is Mel.” She said in one breath, before letting go of his hand and running away into the crowd.
Kai didn’t have time to think about what happened. The group of children had dispersed and the small square had devolved into a loud mess of people.
“What happened, Kai? Is everything okay?” Alana and his sister were already upon him.
Kai smiled reassuringly. “Everything went more than fine.”
Seeing their confused expression, he began to explain what happened and how he had ended up at the end of the line.
“Barely knows how to walk and already goes stealing hearts.” That was his mother's only comment, shaking her head theatrically.
Kai rolled his eyes. It was a good sign she was in the mood to joke. He had been slightly worried she would be upset he had not given the ceremony enough respect. To his surprise, she started ranting about Greenside's bizarre traditions. There were many ways to go about the seventh-year ceremony. What they used to do in Whiteshore was very different and his mother seemed very opinionated on the topic.
He alluded that something had happened and that the ceremony ‘went great’, but he kept the details of the blessing to himself. He didn’t want to pull the spirits into their relationship and his mother could not give him unbiased answers on the subject.
Arriving home, Kai cleaned himself up and changed his clothes. After a quick lunch, the whole family then made a trip to the sea. Even Kea joined them and went so far as to exchange a few words with him.
Nothing more than a little small talk and she left early to play with her friends, but at least it was something. The first step to fix things up.
They spent the afternoon talking on the pebble beach, sharing stories and laughs. Kai planned to leave tomorrow. He didn’t want to prolong the goodbyes for one more day.
His family went back home telling him to not hurry and he remained on the beach by himself. He knew they were preparing a small feast to celebrate him taking a step towards adulthood and his imminent departure.
As the sun started setting on the horizon, painting the waves in beautiful colors, Kai jumped into the sea for one last swim, this time truly the last.
The water was at its warmest this late, he had held back with his family present, now he wanted to push the limits of what he could do. It was exhausting, but also refreshing in some sense. Gliding amidst the waves, floating in the water, no sound except the waters in his ears.
His lungs burning for oxygen and his muscles barely sustaining his weight. He dragged his body to shore, laid on the pebbles heaving.
With a thought, he summoned his race progress.

It was ridiculous how much XP he gained in little more than two months.
With seven new skill slots and a substantial increase in his attributes, it was no wonder he gained so much so quickly. Dora had warned him it happened to everyone and that he shouldn’t get arrogant, but the progress was exhilarating. The pace would inevitably slow down, but for now, it felt amazing. He was more than a quarter through the next enhancement.
Happy and satisfied Kai walked back home. As predicted, they had prepared a feast. As Kai enjoyed the food, he noticed Kea was in a strange mood. He thought they had made some progress earlier.
She remained silent the whole meal, not uttering a single word. She only ate half her plate—which was unusual even when she was upset—and excused herself early. Running out of the house. Kai didn’t know what to think or say.
His mother sighed. “Don’t worry, sweetheart. She’ll be fine in a few days.”
“We’ll keep an eye on her,” Ele added.
It was hard to keep a cheerful mood after that, but they tried to make the most of their last dinner together.
Kai spent the rest of the evening preparing his things for the journey. He had already cleaned and put every piece of alchemy equipment back into the expanded chest. He didn’t have many clothes or other things to pack. Most of the time was spent deciding which of his father’s books he could afford to bring.
With the three volumes, Reishi gave him that he wanted to show Dora and two notebooks, not much space was left. He had to walk for days with that bag, if he didn’t manage the weight properly it could turn into a very bad time. He was contemplating if he should bring a particular book on an extinct civilization when he heard a noise.
Kea was finally home, he could hear moving things around through the thin wall separating the two rooms.
He hesitated for a while, unsure of what to do.
I guess I should try to say something. Can’t make it worse than right now.
He threw the book in his backpack and walked out of his room. The door to her room was ajar but he knocked anyway before entering.
“Kea I’m s—“
He stopped mid-sentence, the room was deserted. Things strewn around in their usual mess. Even a wooden panel leaning against her bed.
Where the heck did she take tha—
A memory he had long dismissed resurfaced. Kai dropped to the ground to check under her bed. As he feared, there was a missing floorboard.
No, no. I must be wrong.
He squeezed his arm inside to check the hole in the floor. It was empty. He checked again, but there was no trace of the package with the knife inside. Running out of the room, there was no trace of Kea either and the door to their house had been left open.

More likely that finishing his father's work might give him some kind of favor and bonus. Since the ancient ruins might hold real knowledge about the spirits and secrets from the past that the invaders are undermining. I thought that might drive him to get to yellow before 14 and unlock professions earlier.

Your math seems legit:-) And you're not wrong that it's an uphill battle - I mean, there's only 2 people in Greenside that have even made Orange 3, so it's not a huge surprise. That said, I think there's probably 3 tricks the author has up their sleeve: 1. What you actually do in a week is likely to affect life experience; in particular I suspect that part of training up his combat skills will be regularly hunting beasts, which should have a significant impact on the life experience side of the ledger. In chapter 45, after killing the red-ranked beast he triggered his experience just 2 days after his last trigger, and it was 316. This extrapolates out to 1106 life experience for the week if consistently maintained (1 red beast / 2 days?). How much of that was the novelty and creating a new orange skill remains to be seen, but I still expect it to be a source of XP. 2. Skills can and do evolve (I think?), and may start over at earlier levels (1?) when they do. I forget if that is supposed to happen at 100? Either way, he plans to remove a skill to get spears, and also plans to learn the orange skill empower. If you looks at the by-tier breakdown, you'll notice that with only 4 orange skills it generated 2/3 the experience of the 10 red skills despite gaining less than 1/4 of the actual levels, since they generate 3x the experience per level. So while they take longer to level, they are a more sustainable source of XP income... which makes sense, really, to need orange skills to power growth through orange racial tier. So between evolutions and increasing numbers of higher tier skills, this should also help a lot. And I have no doubt the author has plans for yellow-tier skills to show up, possibly soon-ish. After all, mana sense was one of his earliest skills, and helped a lot in his growth. 3. When he was first being interviewed for his apprenticeship she asked him if he had advanced his race through potions or equivalent; this implies that these mechanisms exist, and Dora seems to be a master alchemist with a bunch of high-mana herbs in her multi-stage greenhouse, so that's probably on the table. That said, I kind of expect them to want him to prove that he can reach at least yellow before he becomes eligible for that path, though I'll admit that's pretty arbitrary on my part. :-)

Thanks! Okay looks like you're wayyy better at this. Thankfully because I suck. I've been wanting to figure out how much weekly xp (Life and skill xp) he'll need to hit Yellow before he turns 14, this is what I came up with: IF 100k, 200k, 400k progression, then he needs ~1925xp weekly. IF 100k, 120k, 140k, progression, then he needs ~1000xp weekly. You just mentioned so far he had ~220 life xp, the rest being skill xp. 220 life xp weekly for 3 months comes out to about ~2600xp. We're still missing ~23k xp which came from skills. Obviously that isn't sustainable. What do you think of all this? EDIT: Looking at it more, leveling a whole set of 7 Orange skills to lv100 nets 210k xp total. That's.. pretty good. If we assume the less xp progression (100k,120k,140k) that''s 360k total. With just the skill xp we get almost two thirds the way there. The missing 150k will need ~425 life xp weekly. Red skills will also be helping so likely less than that. I guess that makes it much more doable.

Can the sister and mom and other sister all get killed? Like why do you need a cast at all. Then maybe kill off the mentors and the merchants. Then the townies. Then the Beasts. Then the insects. Basically I'm envisioning an empty city archipelago. Then dudebro can wuxia his hardest wuxia yet. Who needs characters or emotional stakes when you can be propelled by neuroticism and vanity? If he loses all perspective he can imagine himself preparing for a blowout confrontation with a mainland enemy and this novel can be tropical Jackal Among Snakes in orange, minus the cast and B-plots.

Interesting analysis! There has certainly been darkness used in this story to set motivation, and it has successfully been central to believable and satisfying character development. There's even a new person ready to be the focus of his helping tendencies in place of his slightly-older sister if you're right and she dies (which Kea seems to really drive towards with her recklessly aggressive personality). That said, I'd personally prefer the clean save; it feels better, he already has enough motivation for the moment, and for a loss this major it seems important to set it up properly and have it be meaningful. A sudden 'you took your eye off her and look now she's dead' isn't satisfying and feels bad. I know there's been foreshadowing with the knife and all, but I'd still expect larger events where the outcome could be foreseen and his efforts may be insufficient to be the lead up to anything of that magnitude.</$.02>

Not gonna lie, this is real important choice for the author. A choice thats going to set the tone (even more) for how the story and the MC progresses from here on out. 1. The MC comes in clutch, and somehow saves his little sis from whatever trouble shes got going on. No consequences, clean save. It means he is going in a good direction and the path he has been on and it’s pace/drive is good. (Imo a bit too cliche and plot armor heavy, but he did gain favor so its possible I guess) 2. He threads the needle. In the sense that he does save his sister, but with added consequences. Could be whatever, for example: she is crippled somehow which result in her losing her apprenticeship and being a burden to the family (damn). Or Kai is outed in someway which could be bad for him and the family. Or any such instances, creativity and originality of the consequence really lies with the author here. Basically, Kai saved the day but paid a price (I feel like this is the most likely course the author will take). 3. His little sister dies. Even with Kai trying his hardest to save her.(my favourite path) I know, harsh but hear me out. Kai has been doing well, in the sense that he’s been stacking a few wins. Yes my second path would be a technically be a loss. However a case can be made Kai did most right and ultimately the “fault” lies with the little sister. It would still push him to be better and guide her more, but not by a lot since she is her own person at the end of the day. Her death however, would literally push a mayor transformation regarding Kai in all possible angles of his life, training, goals, family etc. It is dark but thats why I said it would set the tone for the story even more and it will also let us know how far the author is willing to go in regards to pushing realism and darkness in his story.

My mistake; I misremembered, thinking he was orange when he was accepted by the manor, but he only hit orange 1.5 months before his birthday (when he decided to rank up without painkiller... in the water:-p, chapter 20). Since then his skill gains add up to 26,100, and since it's only been ~3 months, that's probably ~220XP / week of life experience. I should have realized the math would check out:-) So that's great progress, after all!

The 2 months of progress were mentioned - did Kai look at his race progress before the 2 months in town? If so, does anyone know which chapter that was (looks like it was before Patreon's start / chapter 31, at least)? Honestly I'm surprised it's only where it's at after a year with the extra 7 skills and the ridiculous growth in all of his skills, plus the life experience bonus on top of that. After all, 28,000 would be covered by 280 red-tier skill levels alone, or average of 20 red-tier levels per 14 skills... hasn't he covered about that or better just in skills (last listed in chapter 50)? Love your story, btw! :-)

Poor girls, both Kea and Mel got screwed over quite a bit, Kea with having a cheating reincarnator of a brother as her self-appointed rival and Mel with the BS of the elder. I hope Kea doesn't just accept she is not good enough, that seems to be an entirely plausible ending of this situation but it would suck mayor ass.
