New project! Nutshell: make expandable explanations
🕑 Added 2022-08-17 15:25:09 +0000 UTC(can't see .gif above? try this link)
After 2 years of procrastinating on this project... it's finally out! My first post-burnout-hiatus interactive thingy:
🥜 Nutshell: make expandable explanations 🥜
👉 https://ncase.me/nutshell/ 👈
This is a tool for writers, to let their readers dive into details. Not shown in the above .gif, are two other "killer features": 1) you can embed snippets of text from other authors & websites, even stuff written years ago. And 2) you can embed interactives, YouTube videos, and the intros of Wikipedia articles.
If you're writing a blog, news articles, code documentation, educational material, etc... I hope Nutshell helps you help your readers!

Four quick asides:
- Thank you to everyone who voted on my "What Interactive Mini-Textbook Should I Make?" survey! The top 5 picks were: Edu-psych, Public choice, Systems bio, Causal inference, Virtue ethics. Again, this doesn't guarantee what I make next, it's just to get a feel of the room. Here's my (crappy) raw data.
- As mentioned last time, I changed my reward tiers to keep up with inflation and platform fees –– I hadn't changed the tier-$-amounts since I started this Patreon in 2014(!) –– but don't worry, all existing pledges & rewards stay as they are, you're all "grandparented" in.
- Speaking of which, August 2022 Patreon rewards! Here's this month's Wall of Thanks (your names are also embedded inside Nutshell's credits) and Polygon Avatars. I also emailed some of you drawings of ducks.
- On my May 31st Patreon post, I shared my mental model on monkeypox, and predicted it'd be a low-threat, but pre-committed anyway to getting a smallpox vaccine (specifically, Jynneos) to protect against future poxvirus bio-warfare. I am happy to report that last week I stuck to my pre-commitment and got my free Jynneos vax! More details on my unrolled tweet-thread.

Okay, so this is kind of awesome. Am trying to figure out how best to use this for the teaching.

Augh, I wish so bad I could use this in regular Tumblr posts! Wonderful idea, which reminds me of expandable spoiler text on various sites (like GoodReads).

This is awesome!!! Quick error, though--I'm not sure you meant for it to say ":Baguette on French Wikipedia links to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catgirl)"
