Huatsin Bay was an elegant assortment of rugged limestone pillars and humps sticking up out of shallow blue-green water, some of them forming islands big enough to hold an entire town. Because it was wide and sloped gradually toward the bay, anywhere along Main Street offered a clear view of the bay and the nearest island, Valathos's Rest, which looked like a sea serpent arching its back above the water.
I envied the floating fishing village that lived near the natural arch formed by Valathos's Rest because it was absolutely astounding in person. It was so massive, the whole fishing village could nearly fit under it and it provided the grand finale for all tours of the bay.
Up on a small hill overlooking the beach was Utari's tavern, "The Leviathan's Bosom," where those tourists either began or ended their journey. Its lacquered blonde bamboo poles which held up the thatched roof were sparkling in the golden afternoon sunlight. More clear-lacquered bamboo poles made up the walls, arranged in size according to a repeating Fibonacci sequence because the architect who designed it was obsessed with numeric patterns. Bamboo was so strong and so plentiful that the thirty bikes sitting in the racks out front of Utari's place all had bamboo frames.
Shaking myself out of my reverie, I looked over the patrons drinking on the patio. Most of them were pure humans today: they had no points to their ears or tails sticking out from their backsides. Large gatherings of pure humans above ground usually happened when one of the Sanctuaries was working out a new trade deal with us. Pure humans were fine, but had a tendency to look down on the rest of us.
Hopping through the woven wicker arch into The Leviathan's Bosom, I was glad to see a healthy number of cursed humans (easily-identified by their ears and tails), and morphs, including anthros and a couple centaurs. Some morphs were cursed humans who had chosen to stay in their cursed forms, and some of them were like me: beasts. We were morphs that didn't have forms without muzzles, scales, fur, or feathers and would never pass as human unless we wore cloaks.
My survey of the tavern's current patrons ended with me staring at the gorgeous, black-furred female centaur. More precisely, her back end. "I'm not sure it's a good idea. It's not like I can hide what your nose just told you," I said.
"Don't need to hide it, you'll just get bigger tips." She grinned.
"You're not helping," I said, shivering as I thought about stripping out of my clothes and laying atop one of the tables next to a sign saying, "Tips appreciated."

The guy was deep in thought as he studied my foot-long ears.
"Hi, I'm Elara, and I'll be serving you this afternoon...evening? Whatever," I said.
"I'm Niphon," the guy said.
"And I'm Theodona," the gal said.
"Want to start with some drinks?" I asked.

"Me too!" Theodona said.
"Okay! Anything else?" I asked.
"Satay chicken skewers," Niphon said.

I'm trying to be a bit more vivid and artsy with the way I set up scenes. I've written a lot of poetry over the years and I want to be pretty sometimes with imagery and such. Also, I think I defaulted to being utilitarian in scenes, not really getting too detailed about what they looked like, but I fell lighting and texture and other stuff would make it more immersive and only cost a dozen or so extra words.

For this series, I basically put myself in Elara's spot. I'm the sort that'll try to do the thing I'm supposed to help with even if everything is slanted against me. That determination she has to make it through her shift was really fun to write as a result.

Great dialog in this chapter! It felt very natural and was a lot of fun to read. And really enjoyed how seamlessly you wove even more world building into the descriptions and character interactions. Excellent setup to what will inevitably happen to Elara in the following chapter 👌 This sort of situation is my jam so I might be a touch bias 😆
