VINTAGE CON SKETCHES: HK-cinema-homaging Roxy & Caitlin, BUBBLEGUM CRISIS undersuits & GUNSMITH CATS' Rally Vincent!
🕑 Added 2024-09-18 13:00:09 +0000 UTCBehold, a trio of the final few unscanned (I think) Vintage Con Sketches from my now-expended cache of photocopies! First up is a rather unusual sketch of Roxy & Caitlin from Gen13:
...which was based on a promo photo from the somewhat infamous 90s HK cinema flick The N*ked Killer (BTW, using the uncensored term sets off a Patreon autowarning, goofily enough):
I would assume that the commissioner asked for this very specific image, though I certainly had drawn the (in)famous Calico M950 before, as seen in this long-ago Dirty Pair cover illo:
BTW, my editor at the time added the deathless "BUNNIES HO!?" riff, which indeed pretty funny, though the incorrect order of the punctuation in the "!?" bugs me to no end. G-d Playboy magazine hit Proteus and Eclipse with a Cease & Desist order over the bunny ears, which I had tacked on purely because the "bunnygirl" outfit was such a recurring riff in manga and anime at the time. Whoops!
So, the costumes' ears and bunny tails were deleted for the collected versions of Dirty Pair: Dangerous Acquaintances, as seen in the respective Eclipse and Dark Horse editions:
Anyhoo, back to Con Sketches with a 1998 Bubblegum Crisis dealie with Linna and Priss sporting the training outfits seen in the original OVA series' episode 8:

I might well have s'more old photocopies of commissions hiding somewhere around my disheveled, disorganized landfill of a studio space, but this might well have been the last Vintage Con Sketches post for a while, folks.

Great collection of images. Playboy probably would’ve been ok with the bunny ears if the rest of the outfits weren’t so close to the Playboy club bunnies.

Rally looks spot-on. And I'm very glad I've got the original bunny-outfit cover for DP II.

Always loved your Gen 13 work. I've never seen Kat look so badass. But, is Roxy standing on a box or something? I thought there was something like a foot of difference in their heights.

Pretty sure I do, but the photocopy wasn't with the ones I was combing through earlier this week. Will keep looking!

The Linna and Priss is mine, too. I asked about original pages at San Diego 1998 and you offered to do a commission. It was the start of a good run as I made requests for six or seven years straight. Do you have a scan or copy of Sylia and Nene?

The Roxy and Caitlin is mine. I saw the cover for Gen 13 Bootleg #9, the second issue of Grunge the Movie, with the girls lying down with guns laying across their chests. I assumed it was an homage to the Hong Kong movie poster and made a commission request. I think that was the time you were at Fanimecon. However, it turns out you hadn’t seen the image before. I’m really happy with it.
