WORK STAGES on EMPOWERED DELUXE vol.2's cover illo, pt.1: the colors!
🕑 Added 2021-09-15 13:01:03 +0000 UTCHere are two different versions of the colors for my character-packed cover for Empowered Deluxe vol.2, which compiled regular Empowered volumes 4-6 along with a whole lotta bonus material in a limited-edition hardcover collection. (In fact, I plumb forgot that I never got around to showing the colors after posting the B&W work stages over a month ago. Whoops!)
The excellent coloring of the piece was done by the fine folks of the coloring studio Guru eFX ; note that the first version of the cover had the line art of the background characters held in color to make the foreground Emp "pop" more, but the final version restored said line art to black.
UPDATE: Note, by the way, that you can buy big ol' prints of this image (along with three other options) from the Empowered Hiveworks webcomics merch page.

In retrospect, I'm not at all sure that the "limited-edition" aspect of Empowered Deluxe was helpful at all, as pretty much every reader I've ever spoken to about this matter (and I ask this of every congoer who brings me a Deluxe hardcover to sign) just shrugged indifferently about the fact that the hardcovers were "one-offs." Did that make any difference to you folks?
AFAIK Dark Horse has no interest in reprinting the Deluxe hardcovers and their extensive bonus material, but in theory I might consider doing a Kickstarter for 'em down the road. (Well, in theory.)
NEXT TIME ON THIS HERE PATREON: Could be anything, folks, thanks to the more randomized (though far from completely random) "M/W/F+" posting schedule I've adopted of late .

Only a Signed & Numbered hardcover really makes a difference to me. I’ve bought all the paperbacks upon release by preorder at my local comic shop. I bought the hardcovers to have the additional material which ran about 50 pages if I remember right. Well worthwhile. The bonus material may be worth publishing on its own.

I upgraded to the deluxe hardcover editions for the bonus material and also because the binding is sturdier than the glued spine single volumes

Off topic, but I just discovered that some paparazzi photographed Kendall Jenner wearing one of the licensed tank tops Dark Horse put out with your version of Kei on it. No idea what the heck the backstory behind that is, as that shirt hasn't been in production since she was in elementary school AFIAK, so either she's a hard core collector or randomly picked it up as vintage somewhere. Maybe she's posting here?

What stands out to me in these sort-of-retrospective/compilation covers is how both we and Emp now more or less expect to see her supersuit in a Swiss-cheese look, even if she hasn't recently been in a fight to shred it, and how she now just powers right on with it in that state. Ninjette's little test on secretly ripping a chunk off and noting no change in Emp's power when she didn't know about it highlights how much of it really is just Emp's mental state. She now appears in a ripped up suit... and it doesn't bother her. She's a lot more accepting of herself than the _truly_ neurotic mess she was in Vol 1.
