DISTRESSED DAMSELS: 1993 GUNSMITH CATS doujin illo & SHASTI miniseries mention(?)
🕑 Added 2021-07-14 13:17:47 +0000 UTCRunning waaaaay behind today as I struggle with Empowered vol.12's nightmarishly time-consuming cover illo; anyhoo, here are a pair of damsel-related pieces from (I think) 1993, hastily scanned from not-very-good photocopies.
First off is a pseudonymous illo I did for a 1993 edition of Kenichi Sonoda's long-running Comic Market doujin:

Wow, that is a lot of drool, gotta say.
The "Butch Samson" pseudonym bit was an in-joke of sorts, as I wanted to deploy the most American name imaginable; IIRC, at least two other artist friends of mine used said nom de G-Pen on occasion, with my encouragement. (One was, I think, for an Outlander fill-in cover, back in the era when such fill-ins attracted seemingly endless rage and teeth-gnashing from a certain set of English-translated manga readers.)
Prrrrrrobably from 1993 or thereabouts is a DiD con sketch featuring That Darn Shasti once again tormenting Kei and Y-- er, Rose & Lily:

Yeahp, at one time I was quite certain that a miniseries featuring Shasti and the not-actually-dead Deirdre was going to happen; needless to say, it didn't, after Bubblegum Crisis: Grand Mal and a series of other unanticipated projects came along. (Oh, well.)
TOMORROW ON THIS HERE PATREON: Stand by for a rare (if not unique) installment of Design Thursday, folks!

Hi Yeah the good old times. Adam met the style of kenichi sonoda very well 😊 And the boots reminds me from bubblegum crisis.

Wellp, I took up the compound bow this summer (as ammo's a tad cheaper and easier to find), but doubt that I'll progress to bowfishing anytime soon.

Awesome uploads, Adam! I'm not overly familiar with Gunsmith Cats but I swear I have seen an entire episode entirely through .gifs at this point, it looks like a thrilling ride and the cute protagonists don't hurt it none either :P Really love damsel situations that border on the over-the-top, and Rally's skimpy, leathery ensemble here complete with such a unique form of torture from her adversary as a prosthetic weed-whacker hair-cut make for a really memorable DiD. Also like details such as the chain/collar and the playfully marker'd behind by the bad-guy, gotta tag your turf :P

That's a really good imitation of Sonada's style, and boy, would that have been a weird arc in Gunsmith Cats!

Man, that Shasti miniseries sounds intriguing, I'm real curious now what that would have been like. BTW, from what I can tell there's precisely one guy named "Butch Samson" around; he's a champion bowfisherman from the deep South who's picture shows him wearing dirty bluejeans, holding a giant fish, and standing next to a pickup truck, so I think you guessed right in picking that as an excessively American name.

Er... maybe? I cannae recall, alas. Then again, I'm prone to accidentally switching sides along these lines, whether with arms or legs (as with Kei's leg cast in the 5th DP series).

I always wondered if that pic in the KS dojin was indeed by your good self, or if it was by someone copying your style at the time (imitation flattery and all that) glad to have that resolved in my head after all this time. Was the wrong arm thing a joke about GSC being published with the pages all being 'mirror flipped' in the Dark Horse English translation version so everyone using guns etc was suddenly left handed?
