DISTRESSED DAMSELS: Assorted VINTAGE CON SKETCHES edition
🕑 Added 2021-03-03 14:01:02 +0000 UTCBehold, a mostly Kenichi-Sonoda-related assortment of commissioned damsel-in-distress con sketches. A few words:

The concrete block bit with poor Rally Vincent from Gunsmith Cats is an old joke and/or 70s pop culture reference, one I revisited later on in Empowered's earliest installments. To repeat from the webcomic commentary:
At the bottom of panel 1, note the appearance of another, far more obscure pop-culture trope that was all the rage in the crappy TV of my 70s childhood: namely, the fact that Emp is standing in a block of presumably (very) quick-drying concrete, rather than the more practical approach of having a separate such block chained to her legs. This odd trope amused me even as a child, especially as a child who had mixed a great deal of concrete (while helping renovate an old house). Clearly, these were bad guys with plenty of time on their hands, waiting hours while the poured concrete slowly, ever so slowly dried around our heroine’s feet… Actually, this might be a fun joke to revisit! (“Stop moving, or the concrete won’t dry, okay?”)
The rest of the pieces are pretty straightforward, though in retrospect I gotta say that the Priss piece strikes me as a lot creepier than most of the DiD commissions I did during this era:

The leather bondage gear and car trunk setting suggests a very specific commission request, as I would've thought I'd otherwise try to work in some sort of BGC-centric tropes into such a piece. As in something Boomer-related, or at least SF-related; then again, the following Linna DiD piece wasn't exactly BGC-riffic, either.

This thoroughly uninspired sketch was no doubt a "get it done now" bit of hackwork, though the odd ropework suggests either a specific commission request or the use of photoreference. Interestingly, it occurs to me that the illo is actually incomplete, as I never finished writing KNIGHT (as in KNIGHT SABERS) on Linna's undersuit shoulder or the rendering on her torso.
TOMORROW ON THIS HERE PATREON: Very likely work stages on a cover illo, I suspect.

NGL, I wouldn't say no to a set with all four Knight Sabers in Lina's situations, or Priss's. Amazing amount of detail on Priss's pic, too.

The shading in these is still lovely looking back at them -- these posts are always fun just to see what the tastes were back then and how the shading / shaping skills have evolved over time! :D

Another fun fact about the cement shoes: cement and concrete get hot when they solidify. To the point where workers at Hoover Dam went into heatstroke pouring it out.

The Wonder Woman piece is really good.

The way you conveyed the that body of water is impressive.

Hey Wonder Woman! I'm actually surprised you haven't posted her before now that I think about it
