My two cents is that it may be Shep vs Mathurin for the lineup spot. Mathurin's attitude on the court seemed off to me during the preseason. You don't hear Ric praising him for being low maintenance; and borderline dirty fouls are not Pacers basketball. I thought Mathurin adapted well to coming off the bench in year 1; but now it's year 3 and his patience may be wearing thin. Thats the "vibe" I'm getting; and I hope I'm wrong. On the other hand, my vibe on Jarace is he's doing what he's being asked to do, like any self respecting low maintenance player would.

Caitlin yet another fine job! but we need a new article from u, perhaps the toughest one u have ever tried to write. no film no stats, just brain power brought to bare. What does it mean when the team leaders say "We just came out flat." who's job is it to see they don't. how can they as professionals not come out with low energy/flat. how can they as a team not come out flat....is this a money thing...i got the bag now i'm jaded about the NBA? those guys are making way more than me...i will wait until they do something? coach said something i didn't like....they kicked my dog...my mother hates me...wtf is this? just an excuse for we didn't give a rats ass? can't get up today? why do the Celts come out on fire every game? do they have coaches that get it and we don't? who's responsibility is this and how do we see that it does not happen during the season?

I think this is one of this biggest things. We may have 11 guys who need rotation minutes, but with the pace the Pacers play and the 10 deep rotation we use, I still see a lot of minutes for everyone in the regular season. I do think there is an argument for a future consolidation trade, but those are really hard in this league to trade four quarters for a dollar. Overall, agreed that we should enjoy his growth and max effort every minute he gets!

It’s one of those good problems when a player outside the normal rotation is good and getting better. Injuries happen, lineups change, etc. He will have chances to prove his quality in the regular season, and if nothing else he is so easy to root for and enjoy watching. Makes me wonder who the Pacers might be willing to trade by January…

You do an excellent job of breaking down tape, as talented at it as I’ve ever seen. However, we all fall prey to our own schools of thought. I’m grateful and have learned so much from your work about the team I love. However, it is absolutely Shep vs Jarace for the lineup spot. And the players you reference as ‘not developing’ is essentially Jarace. Think there’s no doubt Sheppard will find a way onto the court and help this team. However, they have to play Jarace over a period of time to see if he can be a part of the solution.

As an addendum, I don't enter into any game with any thesis and I don't really appreciate that accusation. I work hard at this job and stay up late while working another job to re-watch these games. I watch the film and write about what I observe. Also, how have young players on the roster not been given opportunities to develop? Mathurin was the starter at the beginning of last season. He's going to be heavily involved as the Sixth Man this season. Those aren't real opportunities?

Hmm, pretty sure I wrote about the progress of Jarace's shot. The other inflection points have not been consistent throughout preseason. Also, this is missing the point -- entirely. This isn't about Ben vs. Jarace. That's why the comparisons with TJM, Nembhard, and Nesmith were used. All of them started last season with smaller roles, in part, because of roster logjams and organization priorities. Those things changed throughout the season, and they eventually earned bigger roles. Based on preseason and the need for positional size (which I've mentioned many, many, many times), I'm not expecting Sheppard to be in the rotation to start the season. But, if players don't take steps forward (as was initially the case with Mathurin last season), or they ultimately end up needing to make a consolidation trade, his ability to play with any lineup along with what he brings defensively could lead to a bigger role. Lastly, regardless of garbage time, the things I referenced aren't stretches -- they are things he wasn't doing at this time last season. I understand the differences in ceiling, I don't need that explained to me.

How can anyone not love Sheppard’s energy. He is an opportunist with a very good shot that can overcome average athleticism to be a nice spot shooter on a second unit for most NBA Teams. Breaking down tape late in games to make a point that Pacers need to find time for him is unfortunately a stretch. I think he’s a great reason to pursue a consolation trade but his ceiling is too low to push Jarace out of the lineup. We have our 2 max players so if we plan to improve it seems like it will have to come from players like Walker and Mathurin making strides. You failed to break down the late game progress for Jarace on the previous matchup and seemingly focus on select tape to prove your own thesis. Unless the goal is to be a top 4-5 seed in perpetuity, giving other high ceiling athletes real time to develop needs to be a top priority.
