This was mainly about wanting to cover that he got his groove back doing what he does in Cleveland. And also the importance of those cutting plays when he isn't technically involved in the action. I covered the passing extensively last summer and in my piece about what a more physical NBA would mean for the Pacers. Among guards who averaged at least five drives per game last season, Mathurin had the lowest pass% of any guard. He wasn't as determined to score no matter what as a sophomore, but he can certainly struggle to make the right read against closeouts or identify passing avenues. The rest that you mentioned is included in my notes from the Memphis game. The defense, well, looked like his defense.

I just don't think Mathurin is the answer to the team chemistry. In my opinion he doesn't see the floor and his teammates, he just concentrates on bullying his way to the basket while many times the teammates stand open and sometimes shake their heads. He is too inconsistent with his shooting, and the defense needs work. I have never liked his body language on the bench. I look for a trade in the future, but obviously hope he improves and proves me wrong.

Really appreciate your insights. Also, imo Edey is going to be not just a star, but a superstar. His size is matched by his heart and determination to be great -- plus off the charts lower body strength

I'm going to touch on some of this in the next post, but as much as Mathurin did Mathurin things (in a good way) against Cleveland, he also did Mathurin things (in a not-so-good way) against Memphis. There were a lot of defensive issues, even beyond just the back-cuts. The Grizzlies are a very opportunistic cutting team and that was the case against several players on the roster. Mathurin, though, also gave up straight-line drives, ran into contact on off-ball screens, and surrendered two-on-the-roller advantages with his indecisiveness on ball. Not great, especially given that he had a chance to start. The overall compete level on defense has been disappointing for the team as a whole, just going to have to hope that it's preseason doldrums. And yes, I would agree -- Jarace has excellent passing instincts as a connector. He is not the second-best passer on the team.

A few observations from preseason -- Mathurin is still so, so inconsistent. Watching him turn his head and get beat back door again early against the Grizzlies was frustrating Walker is showing more signs. I was surprised when Quinn Buckner called him the second best passer on the team. At his best, maybe. At other times, he is by far the worst passer on the team, like when he grabbed a rebound against the Grizzlies and immediately through it away under the basket I like Wiseman. He plays hard, runs the floor, seals well and finishes through contact. He is working at the defensive end. Got to make free throws, though, or he becomes unplayable in a close game. Edey was by far the best player on the court Monday. He is moving so much more fluidly. He actually beat the Pacers down court a couple times for dunks. He plays with such heart and effort. His summer conditioning and weight loss program has been one of the most successful I have seen. As hard as he works, I can't imagine he will not develop an outside shot and a passing game out of the high post.
