I was most impressed by his rebounding, which is an extension of the defense you mentioned and the hustle play that Caitlin pointed out above. Still room for growth, but clearly he is locked in. I think I am still of the opinion to have him come off the bench, but close if he is cooking.

Thank you! I look forward to your next article!

That was the best Myles has looked defensively in a while. He's show some slippage over roughly the last 1.5 years, and the fit between him and Siakam can be tricky, but this was a step-up -- especially from what was shown during preseason.

Hi, nice to meet you and good question. I wrote about this topic several times in different forms over the summer. The short answer is, at the start of last season they were very much attempting to play the math game by limiting threes. That meant playing single coverage in the post, guarding the PnR 2v2, and being very conservative with the low-man. That started to change midway through the season and especially during the second round of the playoffs, when they were flooding Siakam strong-side. This season, they've continued to make some tweaks. You'll hear the low-man being loud and early, calling out "I'm low." Also, depending upon who is guarding the PnR (i.e. Mathurin-Wiseman), the player guarding the weak-side wing will be ultra-aggressive with next off-ball stunts. They've also started mixing in some 2-3 zone with Haliburton playing at the ball, so there have been some changes. That said, the defense was also very different the season before last, and there was a reason why they made changes: both schemes led to bottom-10 finishes. As such, unless there are leaps in internal improvement from a few key players, they're arguably getting about what should be expected from this roster, imo. I'll link some of the pieces below this response in a separate comment for added info.

I think our defensive system last season was to defend the 3-point as a priority and get scored on easily in the paint. League-wide, the index for DFs prioritizing 3-points was poor, while the index for DFs prioritizing and defending near the rim was good Do you think there will be changes at DF this season? I think IND's starting four are above average DFs, and I feel that we have a DF system that prevents Miles from playing well. Sorry for my poor English, I'm Japanese.

Glad to get by this game as it had all the markings of a disaster in that first half. The defense of Nembhard just amazes me. This guy never takes a minute off and the way he bodies up to the opponents is amazing. I just can't imagine he can go 82+ games expanding that much energy. The body can only take so much. Myles Turner gets too much criticism in my opinion (mostly from uninformed fans) but when he is not in that middle this team is just not the same. Keep up the great coverage Caitlin, you are a rock star on this stuff!

He'll have to be standing in the right spot on team defense as well. I was more heartened by his shooting jumpers. I know Benn wants to go 1 on 4 and dunk, but him remembering he can REALLY shoot is a plus for this team. His jumper will open up the world to TJ and even Obi

Second half Mathurin is best case scenario for his season and fit: reliable on offense and makes up for defensive lack by simply trying really hard. If he can just stay healthy and be consistent…
