Firstly I'd like to thank you for your response. You're extremely thoughtful and thought provoking. In response to what you said, I think all of the points you made are absolutely important to contextualizing the game. I also definitely agree on the screen defense concerns. I guess I'm just hopeful that the intelligence and activity he's shown can translate into other parts of his game. Rick seems to have a much stronger understanding of obi and his playstyle than his last coach as his comments about obi's team first /connector style mirrors both how obi sees himself and how his trainer David zenon did as well. It feels like he has a real opportunity to grow by being understood and appreciated. Could be wrong, but I feel like that goes a lot for players both for on and off court development.

He makes quick decisions moving the ball as the screener. He never made a pass after rolling toward the basket last season https://x.com/C2_Cooper/status/1717890085209743377?s=20

Hmm... Offensively, probably yes. He was mainly just finding his own usage with cuts, steals, and leak-outs -- although seeing him drive to the basket from outside the 3-point line was a welcome sight. Defensively, he was Wemby's primary defender but only contested three of his shots. Wemby didn't get a lot of touches unless he was grabbing and going off the glass. He never set a ball-screen and he only logged five post-ups -- two of which he drew fouls on, with another resulting in an assist. Seemed like the Spurs should've gone to that more, especially since the Pacers are reluctant to double. San Antonio was also on a back-to-back and he settled for some fadeaways. Still need to see more from Toppin, as far as defending screens, to make verdict on that front. But! This was by far his best overall game. He's very active and intelligent in the way he moves without the ball.

Hahah. That's a fun question. Believe it or not, I'm actually not of the "abiding by the unwritten rules" camp. If you don't want to give up 154 points, play defense. My opinion would've been the same if the Pacers were in the same situation against the Celtics. Play through to the buzzer, in my opinion.

Thanks so much, Trenton! I'm so glad you enjoyed it!

The real question (that isn’t even really a question in my mind) is: would you have taken than shot, TJ? The boos and hisses seemed to indicate he should have. *eye roll*

Feel like he was just doing the easier stuff too think he can take it a bit further has hub like tendencies can move the ball, throw lobs when given opportunity, can self create but prefers to not disrupt the flow, very rarely has turnovers

Last night was the best he’s looked. Very promising.

Great analysis & even better writing! 👏

Does toppin's performance feel replicable? Seems like he is starting to settle in and it hasn't even been 10 games yet (great article as always btw)
