It felt necessary to sub Hield for Mathurin, let's just that.

We now know that Haliburton tweaked his ankle as well. I missed that while trying to find a workable way to watch that wasn't constantly being interrupted by buffering. And yes, more teams started targeting him at the end of last season and there will be an incentive to do so because of how he kick-starts things in transition.

The link is no longer available but there were drawbacks to how exaggerated their presence was at the nail last season. It wasn't just about giving up threes. They get slammed by flare screens or give up stampede cuts. Also, they weren't always principled with when and how far the low-man should help. There's less peel switching, too. Everything is geared around pursuing. If they limit threes aren't having to blitz mismatches, double the post, etc. -- there's also the potential for their rebounding to improve organically. This is the thought process. Either there will be development from Haliburton and Mathurin, when or this could go poorly with that group. We'll see!

It's a lot different than last season. The big is up to a touch, with a gentle nudge to prevent the quick out, and then it's 2v2 with a veer if the guard can't get back in front before the ball breaks the free throw line. There was a lot more help at the nail and from the low-man at this time last year, which had it's drawbacks. Otherwise, they would put Nesmith on the opposing five and switch. They aren't as willing to do that with Toppin. We'll see how the new scheme fits with time. I have some questions for the starters.

Nights like this make you realize that we are still missing the 2nd offensive hub

our PNR coverage looks really bad

Great analysis! I couldn’t help but notice the hunting of Haliburton down the stretch. I’m curious why you think Carlisle wants to implement this system where they limit threes and avoid rotation when mathurin and Haliburton don’t seem particularly skilled for it? Are there longer term downsides to a blitzing system or whatever else the pacers leaned on last year?

For the entire game I couldn’t help but feel like the pacers were clearly the better team. As you pointed out so well here… seems like the reasons they lost can all be fixed. And of course, the shots will fall. Credit to Caruso for slowing Haliburton down. Seems like a good strategy for opposing teams to hunt haliburton on defense. At the very least it will force him to spend energy. Still looking for the Pacers #2 option - especially for nights when the opposing team has a disruptor like Caruso
