Thanks!

To be fair, the catalyst for the article was what he showed on defense and my conclusion that there is a very real example to point to now that should provide expectations of what he's capable of at that end of the floor. As far as what lineups were on the floor against the Sixers, I think some of that had more to do with how Philadelphia was guarding Haliburton. They were doing a lot of face-guarding that led the Pacers to have him start possessions away from the ball, with either TJM or Bruce Brown as the initiator. Benn isn't ready to do that just yet, and Nesmith was necessary to make the small lineups work. Buddy wasn't making shots, but he provides more tension as a screener and in transition than anyone else on the roster. I'm not worried about Buddy's shooting at this point.

Thanks for the great analysis Caitlan. Sadly since the catalyst for this analysis (play through the Bucks take down), Ben M. (as oppossed to the Shep) had a "meh" game vs the 76ers on Sunday and was unplayable yesterday evening. He was so unplayable that Carlisle played Buddy over him most of the second half and Buddy couldn't find the goal if it was 3 feet wide yesterday evening (among other evenings so far this short season)!!! I love this team, they are fun to watch, their defense collectively is improved (but not yet great). However, if it continues to be Haliburton playing Atlas with Myles as the only RELIABLE supporting scoring cast (maybe I should add Nesmith to that grouping...with Toppin peaking in), I don't see how this team is successful over 82 games. Any thoughts as to what is up with the less than stellar execution of supposed complimentary scorers, Mathurin and Held, now 11 games into 23/24?

Caitlin Cooper

I think the main thing now is there's a precedent. That's why I wrote "expectations should now follow." The team knows he can do this and they should be reminding him of it -- frequently. Also, as I alluded to, I think they should take note of the results when they were at least feigning help and sending some doubles, by comparison to the results against LeVert/Hayward/etc. with single coverage. They don't want to put themselves in rotation and the priority is to limit threes, but they may need to be more willing to adapt, like they (eventually) were against the Bucks. He wasn't tested in some of the ways he struggles away from the ball, but he made progress. For now, that's what is important. Celebrate the small victories.

How optimistic would you be that these improvements are more reflections of long-term improvement on the defensive end and not just a few flashes of brilliance?

Jeff Hasser

I do view him as somewhere between a 6th man and a borderline all star. His defense and passing will probably be the deciding factors of he can reach that higher level.

Caitlin Cooper

Based on the prior eight games, I can't say I saw him making several defensive plays against All-Star caliber players coming. He was tremendous!

I hate to admit it, but I was one of the fans that was pretty down on Mathurin. I don’t think I have ever been as pumped on a defensive possession as the Mathurin strip on Giannis at the end. Glad to see in-depth analysis verifying my thought that it was not just a one play defensive game from him as well

Eli Curry

I think part of his game will always be dependent on who is on the court with him. The 2nd unit this year is shooting so well that I think if you asked him to go back to the 6th man role where he was the lead scorer on that unit, he would be very willing to find Nembard, Nesmith, Smith or Hield on the wings. Those 4 guys feasting on open looks combined with Mathurin's ability to get to the rim? Sheesh!

Lifenthusiast

Agreed. Hopefully this is not an anomaly! I've described his defense as "focused on stopping stars but nonexistent against everyone else."

Caitlin Cooper

He's shown much more awareness of where he needs to improve than what was the case at Summer League, that's for sure.

Caitlin Cooper

Of course, I had to follow-up after my deep dive over the summer and last season!

Caitlin Cooper

He's shown what he's capable of now, so there should be expectations.

Caitlin Cooper

So glad you enjoyed! I'll admit, based on what I've seen from his defense to start the season, I didn't expect to see that type of leap this early.

Lifenthusiast

"in the shadows of his sudden emergence and the expectations that should now follow." Your friendly neighborhood Uncle Ben is lurking somewhere in the shadows... "Responsibility... not expectations... great. responsibility."

Eli Curry

People were worried about Benny and Nemby looking a bit slow to start the season, but clearly they've been working on new skills and it's just taking time to develop. Nemby went from 1-16 from 3 to start the season to 6-8 in the last 3 games, and Benny...well this article is an excellent explanation of what he's been working on, haha! Great time to be a fan of the Pacers and of Basketball, She Wrote!

Jeff Hasser

Mathurin continues to show this season that he is aware of his deficiencies and wants to improve on them. Things like this make me so optimistic that he will build out his toolset. Very excited to see example like this game where he is starting to put them all together.

I've been dying for a C2Cooper Mathurin article. Glad he finally played well enough to warrant one, and thank you for giving us one
