It's interesting that both Final Fantasy IX and Majora's Mask — two games released in the year 2000 at the tail end of their respective consoles' generation — both had heavy, dark themes of impending doom and death. Why? I don't know, but I get the feeling that with Y2K hysteria being fervent around this time, maybe that collective uncertainty bled into some creatives' work.

Quality video as always John. Feature length even! I have a beautiful memory attached to my experience with Final Fantasy IX. I was streaming my first playthrough of the game with my friend Yvonne and we had a ball of a time. Throughout playing the game, I was notified of her terminal diagnosis and she eventually passed. But like IX, I always focus on the good times I had with her instead of just her death and FF IX will always be a game I cherish because it'll never make me forget my friend.

Final Fantasy 9 is the game that got me to finally play some of the other Final Fantasy for the first time excluding 14 since I had been playing it for a little bit by then. 9 is truly a special game for me.

Melodies of Life is THE song of all time <3 There was also this AMV I watched years ago of Chrono Trigger set to song "Heroes Live Forever", and because the song fit so well I genuinely thought as a kid that it was made for the game.

I don't remember exactly what I did, but I used a guide to beat Ozma, turning it into a joke where something I equipped made it so that some of its attacks straight up healed me, while the rest backfired on it, so it essentially beat itself.

Awesome! I'm looking forward to the FFX video. I played it for the first time last year, and something about it clicked with me more than any of the turn-based Final Fantasies that came before it. The Besaid theme is so nostalgic and soothing.

FFIX taught me the value of simplicity. It has a simple story, simple characters, and simple gameplay, but all of it is just so solid and well executed that I don't even care. It is still one of my favorite RPGs and one of my favorite PS1 games. I think this video really did it justice.

So I stopped at the 11 minute mark as I remembered that I need to give 9 another try. I tried it on game pass years ago and I felt silly that I didn't know what to do in the opening segment. Also, I feel you about generative AI. It's made reddit threads and sketchy sites less fun to look at with constant generated images 😭
