I can not see how adapting to fan reaction and loosening up on what’s been consistently one of their less regarded character mandates is more idiotic then trying to stubbornly stick to a shoehorned characterization that’s been shown to not work outside of Sonic Boom

They’ve been lighting up in that mandate, presumably after the negative reaction to it. IDW’s writing team has been allowed to write Shadow in ways that would have previously been rejected before.

Isn’t the idea of Shadow showing a sense of compassion and humanity against what SEGA wants for the character though?

Never in my life did I think I’d describe Shadow as a sweetheart, but him trying to buy concert tickets for Amy landed him solidly there. To answer your question on how to tackle visual novels Johnny, I’d recommend what you did here with riffing and poking fun at some goofy or silly elements or reactions (like the step ladder in the Ace Attorney series.)

I can understand the reason for the Shadow game references since it’s meant to show the stark contrast between their characterization in both games. Not that either one falls in line with what SEGA currently mandates though.

Man I almost completely forgot about this game. I should finish it eventually. Besides that good review Johnny I think your review style works well with visual novels. As for worrying about the presentation, I’d say between the two franchises you mentioned it’d only be the early Phoenix Wright games that’s be a problem as Danganronpa and latter Ace Attorney games I’d say have enough visual variety to make it more interesting to look at on their own. And if you decide to review Hatoful Boyfriend I think a simple screenshot should be enough to enthrall a person for around 10 minutes.

The title alone put me off from actually trying the game but I was pleasantly surprised not only by this review but how interesting the game actually is. I've played some visual novels and I certainly wouldn't mind a Sonic the Hedgehog one at some point. Also was very surprised to see Johnny making Shadow the Hedgehog game references. And for the most part they were actually Pleasant instead of infuriating. Way to go Ace Attorney Johnny. Speaking of I'd love a review retrospective on the Phoenix Wright games

Yeah that's how he's been written but that was always a shitty writing choice to me. Shadow is much better as the standoffish type who still cares deeply for his friends and won't be showy of it rather than just...worse Vegeta

Isn’t Shadow rather off character in this game though? I thought he wasn’t the type of character to show kindness or compassion in any capacity while caring for no one and only focusing on getting the job done and nothing else.

A lot have come close like Resident Evil 4 Remake and God of War Ragnarok. Unfortunately there has yet to be a 3D Sonic game that has come close to those levels.

True, but 3 out of 4 times when the ensemble appears it is one of the negatives of the game as stated by critics.

Sonic has been working without an ensemble since Unleashed, in 2008, and they still managed to produce some painfully mediocre games. The friends aren't the cause.

Ironic you say they should put Blaze in more games given Frontiers showed that Sonic can work better without the overly bloated ensemble, Big the Cat not withstanding. If they do include more than just Sonic, Eggman, Tails, Amy, Knuckles, and Shadow into future games, then it just means SEGA and Sonic Team have learned nothing from past games.
