I thought with over the hedge, they were doing "the music man" so they thought they needed at minimum the con artists and the guy who's trying to sniff him out as a grifter. I never liked it either but like your bf i was obsessed with Hoodwinked as a kid. saw it multiple times in theater. also had seen fletch and loved the references back then.
