You mentioned the original xenobytes being less villianous, it's a total spot on observation. I went on a little marathon a few years back. There's a great line of " to some we are angels, to some demons" that rings out because it actually is based on the intent of the person opening the box, if it's out of curiosity, lust, greed, want of power, usually ya get got. There is a specific example of intent mattering where a character gets tricked into opening the box and the xenobytes both sense it, and go after the one who was actually trying to trick her and open the box.

If you want to check out some of the other Hellraiser films: 2 is genuinely good 3 is total schlock but it's hilarious 4 is also scholck, but not as hilarious 5 & 6 both have some interesting ideas, but are limited by their direct-to-video budgets. Good for D2V horror, but not really good overall. 7 is pretty bad and not very memorable 8 is embarrassing. The two films Dimension made on literally a few thousand dollar budgets, without Doug Bradley and just to retain the rights to the franchise, are abysmal garbage.
