VIDEO GAME CONTENT WARNING!
🕑 Added 2024-09-23 11:31:52 +0000 UTCSorry for the flurry of posts so far today! But... I thought this might be of interest to some of you.
We occasionally still get press releases relating to gaming, and we just got this one through. I believe it's from somebody who has a bit of a (less than favourable) reputation in retro gaming circles.
I'd be interested to hear opinions on this:
"News Editor,
we trust all's well.
You'd be forgiven for not knowing that Elite (a former Golden Joysticks winner) became truly 'middle-aged' last month, celebrating its 40th anniversary.
Coincidentally, we're soft-launching a new service. That's been an ambition of ours for some years.
We call it elite-systems.auction ('ESA')
You might think of it as an eBay for game IP.
By game IP we mean: the copyright and other 'intellectual property rights' in computer and video games.
Our goal is to create a location where the owners / controllers of game IP can offer their property for licence and for sale and where prospective buyers can make offers to acquire it.
Presently, we're some distance from achieving that goal, however we do have a 3-step plan to get us there.
In the first instance, we're listing some of Elite's game IP at ESA.
Presently prospective buyers can peruse the listings and then, after registering with the service, undertake to buy or to be invited (once the auctions are 'open') to bid.
Once we're satisfied that the auction bidding system is robust, we'll move to step 2.
During step 2, those registered with the service will not only be able to undertake to buy but additionally they'll be able to bid in the Dutch-style auctions that ESA will host.
All undertakings to buy and all successful bids will be subject to contract, a draft of which will be issued directly to prospective buys and directly to successful bidders using the contact details provided on registration.
Once we're satisfied that the auction listing system is robust, we'll move to step 3.
During step 3, those registered with the service will, in addition to the above, be able to list their own game IP at ESA.
Presently, and for the immediately foreseeable, the ESA service will be entirely free to both the owners / controllers of game IP and to the prospective buyers.

This feels a lot like a solution in search of a problem, and more than a little desperate. (The weird video game IP ponzi scheme thing, I mean, not this Patreon.)
