Newsletter: week of 5/5
🕑 Added 2025-05-09 19:59:27 +0000 UTCThis week, my SIM card was swapped in and out of every mobile phone there is. It started with a Nokia 2780, which has a surprisingly capable 5-megapixel camera (see below). It then sat in the Minimal Phone, which is a buggy mess. Then I had it in the Light Phone III, the Pixel 9a, and back to the S25 Ultra, which I have been daily driving for the last few months.
So if I missed your call or text, I am sorry.
I will publish a video explaining all of this on Sunday (I think), but for now, all I have to say is that the phone you use doesn't matter. It's easy to get caught up in ecosystems, colored bubbles, and camera specs, but I've found that I'm the same terrible texter and untimely responder no matter what phone I'm using ๐ .
Oh, but the more time I spend in the Android ecosystem, the more certain I am that it is WORLDS better than iOS, which feels increasingly dated and clunky.
With that hot take out of the way, here is everything I thought about this week, plus some photos from that Nokia flip phone because... ๐
What I read:
Meta bans largest Muslim news page in India
S/o to recently independent tech journalist Taylor Lorenz for breaking this story. She is a total powerhouse.
GlobalX, Airline for Trumpโs Deportations, Hacked
๐ช๐งโ๐ป
Nikon is Driving a Custom, Bright Yellow Land Cruiser Across the US
Well... this is different. Love the grill plate though!
What I watched:
Surface Pro 12 hands-on: Microsoft's smaller, redesigned tablet
The Surface Pro 12 is smaller and does not have a Surface Connect port or removable storage. I know this is just one device, but this year's tech trend is shaping up to be "how can we charge more for less?"
Oh no, Google is turning everything into a podcast
I love watching Andru's videos because he was a podcaster first and doesn't know, and therefore doesn't follow, any video making stereotypes like having perfect A-roll or typical music. It's awesome.
I Bought a Leica M6 - My New Favorite Camera
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: If I ever start making real money, I'm not telling a soul, but there will be signs.
New York City Lunch Crisis
This feels like the OG Casey <3
What I listened to:
Fred again.. - tired of being strong (Unreleased ID)
Martin Garrix & Arijit Singh - Weightless
The Future (Purple Disco Machine Remix)
Glass Animals - Popular St
With any luck, I'll have a fresh video for you on Sunday! In the meantime, I dare you to put your SIM card into something different this weekend ๐.
appreciate ya,

image processing for days, I hear you there. I can't confidently say that it has gotten any better :/ but I also carry a stand alone camera with me everywhere, so I don't rely on my phone too much.

Ya know, itโs looking more and more like my next phone will be an Android. Havenโt used one as a daily device since the Nexus 2 but Iโm getting more into open source stuff (and kinda over Apple) so it might be time to go back once my 13 mini dies.

I was checking in on my dev Android (Pixel 6 Pro) the other day, and I feel you here. There are so many neat little innovations. Like holding up your palm to the camera to start a countdown timer! However, the image processing makes me sad, I wish I could turn it off. Maybe it's better in the new Pixels?
