Thanks, Mike! You are right about the potential for damage there! I didn't even consider that. Designer bias I guess haha Very interesting about your trainee. I imagine it would be hard at first to feel the vibrations acutely. Might be one of those cases where the other senses make up for the one lacking.

Reamers are an odd one, in my opinion. A colleague of mine used to work for the fire safety industry and he said whenever they ran reamers on acrylic, it would have to be a brand new, razor sharp reamer and it would be kept in its’ own separate box as to not damage the flutes. As soon as you put it anywhere near anything hard, it’s basically useless. I suppose they’re a precision cutter after all 😁

Turning on centers? Love it. Turning on centers using something in a chuck? I'm down. Regarding the puzzle, I love it. My only note is a split thread and a nut can run into damaging the thread (despite the cupric nut) if someone tries to use the nut to wedge the bolt open or apply additional force (which would be one of the avenues of inquiry when trying to determine the mechanisms involved). Otherwise that five multistart is amazing. I was reminded of a machinist I trained with who was deaf. I told him I relied on sound so much to determine if things were going well, and asked how he did the same. He replied he could do the same just with machine vibrations. I suppose any noise is just a vibration but that was really, really cool. Anyway, another great video. Just don't get to the point where you have a video on making a new Box Of Shame. (with chamfers, a rail mount system, flaming pipe organ, or whatever would make it a worthy resting place for scrapped parts)

😂 Thanks Erik! And I think you are right on both counts. I've never really tracked down good reaming practices. my grandfather always say to run the speed really slow. But that doesn't line up with the SFM for good cutting. Increasing the feed rate does make sense though since there are more flutes!

I got you. One thing I might suggest since you will probably build one is to make the internal 3/4 thread a coarser pitch. It's turns out it's kind of easy to overtighten the fine thread to the point you need wrenches to get it apart 😂

So I just went to our library, found the webster's dictionary and looked up "clever bastard". Wouldn't you know it - there's a picture of you there. How bizarre 😁 Honestly, I saw the notification about an hour before leaving work, and I was super excited to see what you've got for us this time. Needless to say, I'm extremely impressed. I genuinly thought I had the mechanism figured out in the beginning, but as it later transpired - I was only half right. Seriously impressive take on a classic machinist puzzle. I tip my imaginary hat to you, Brandon. P.S. - since I like picking holes in people's practice where I have absolutely no right in doing so, 2 things I spotted - 1) your diamond shape turning tool seems to be a smidge off centre as it left a tiny nub when you were turning the pins 2) when you run reamers, you should run them at 1/2 speed of a normal drill, if not less. Or to split hairs even further, half the speed and twice the feed rate(easier said than done on a manual quill) With that said, it could just be the speed of the footage playing tricks on me Just thought I'd point those out 😉 Can't wait to see what's next!
