I might be reaching a little here but I'm starting to believe that the helmet is either cursed or is working as a unwitting conduit to a eldritch being beyond comprehension. The helmet horror is basically her mind trying to ground itself against the experience and its a harrowing one. Bonus points if that old helmet always seems to pop up in places where it shouldn't be. Calling out as a little way to make things easier if she just 'puts it on' for awhile. Also Sancha is just being the most adorable little triangle with that hat and I almost can't stand it!!!
