We make fires out here.
You learn how pretty young. It's a good way to keep the night at bay without destroying it completely. The new cities light up like beacons, but out here it's different. Beyond those walls that seem to touch the sky we find a balance. Light in the dark, shadow in the sun. The tide rolls in and out, and we go with it.

Sometimes things remain. Tiny pieces of light that glow under the ash when the fire's died out. Sharp-petaled roses washed up on the shore when the tide lowers.
